I used to race these a fair bit, don't anymore. There is a guy on the North Shore Dave Tuke dave.mcglashan@hughesandtuke.co.nz who used to sell parts second hand and often had old hulls around after he had butchered boats. You could contact him and see if he had a set around in good condition, probably a lot less then building a new set!!

Have to agree NZ is expensive, just back from a week of business around the world staying in multiple Hotels. You notice it immediately but I'm also struck by the fact our customer service is not what it used to be and quality is certainly gone especially (if it ever existed) for food. Saying that I'll be happy to get back to the South Island this morning and away from People.

It's mainly there for the large number of commercial boats and also given the quite long distance at 5 knots, also a lot of these boats make less wake at slightly higher than 5 knots.

Interesting Jon, which brands you looking at? I'm in the same boat looking at raft options. I have a dedicated locker for the raft so looking at soft shell options. Buying new vs. refurbishment no brainer. BP i have a soft shell 4 person that is still certified that I could loan possibly will check the expiry date when on the boat later today.

I think if I remember correctly it had a big fire. But it did make it's way North under it's own motors.

Beachmaster are good, however the removable version install with caution. Make sure you get the template exact otherwise you will struggle to remove them/put them back on! Also the lugs on the removable Beachmaster version over time become very hard to move by hand and require some force via a screwdriver (probably sand in between the two surfaces). On smaller tenders expect some spray back when on the plane from them if you leave them installed and up. Otherwise concur a fantastic product and great support.

I have a Rocna and Excel, both good, Excel i think better, once it's set it's never unset, just takes quite a bit sometimes to set it especially if you rush it for a day anchor.

Eruptn, I have been through several speakers now and in the end gave up. I now have it routed through the cockpit speakers if i need it. But to be honest I don't have it on much!!

Back to the round NZ what an interesting race. I'm loving working out the weather and what's coming, interesting moves, some models yesterday showed South East, might be interesting. Next 24 hours will be very interesting. I've sailed down that way and the wave height will be fantastic!! Would be fantastic to see more boats do this race. Good to hear some updates from the yachts. Does anyone think anyone think any of the yachts will seek shelter in Milford? Might be going backwards otherwise?

I think some of the comments in thread show the true nature of the human race. Taking personal shots and commenting on the appearance of someone you probably don't know is pretty low. We are all guilty of it at times I guess. Can't we keep the tone of these threads a little more honest, positive and in general show the better side of humanity? It would keep this site a little more interesting. One could look at the good that a business like MH has done for NZ, the people it employs, the buildings it rents or purchases, let alone what he has contributed to the NZ boat building mar

The issue is the fair lead is quite narrow so that the shank gets jammed and won’t flip. It’s a good setup but means that the flip needs to happen before the fairlead if that makes sense.

KM answers are: Rocna yes Rollers likely worn I will replace good idea 10mm chain Distance from winch to front roller approx 900mm which is also where the roller is i.e the only thing the anchor touches before it hits the water. Anchor is setup with an over and under roller to lock it in place on the bow and a retaining pin. Straightener issue was length, would not sit nicely from the anchor into the anchor locker, i.e. lid would need modification if I was to use it.

I have an issue with my anchor. Currently no swivel installed as I don't have a lot of faith in them, only a shackle however the anchor almost always comes up upside down. I'm thinking of installing a Ultra Swivel as a friend has had great results doing this. I've tried the anchor straightener but no luck it's too big to fit on my boat and does not play well in the anchor locker. So anyone using one and how do they work so far?

I used that self amalgamating tape on my spreaders and it's lasted two years, starting to come off now on one side, not bad really.

Such a lovely part of New Zealand there, sailed up real close there last year had a lovely 10 knots and was able to sail right in close at dawn there, strong memory of sailing. Portland Island looks so rugged.

BP, just rock up and tie up. There is a guy living in the house close to the office that acts as the manager. There is a lady (forgot her name) who lives aboard who manages the marina bookings. With your length you may struggle to get into the visitor berth if there are other yachts there.

All about what the market wants to buy and willing buyers I guess. To be fair to the majority of punters this is not their first choice boat. They would rather buy something shiny with a name that starts with J or B. However I'm wondering if selling a boat just before Christmas is the best idea? A good Christmas present for someone though! Have not seen this boat in a while but I'm guessing she will need quite a bit of work to get her race ready?
