  1. He was a key part (from skipper to head honcho) is what, five consecutive AC victories? Six? I doubt that will ever be equaled. I met his smarter brother once when he dropped into our club - very unassuming and gracious person.
  2. It is a very good film, but leaves out a huge amount of important points from the original book - Ott's Sharks and Little Fishes https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/411611.Sharks_and_Little_Fish which states that, among other things, the German submariners did not hesitate to murder officers who were incompetent or cruel. If the movie/TV versions were accurate, they would show that. But that would not boost the war-heroic narrative, would it?
  3. My first downvotes - just so crushing !!
  4. your restrictions are tougher than ours, we'll just have to wait a month (or more?) to find out if yours have been more efficacious. Here by the Sweetwater Seas, for now all the yacht club facilities are closed; but the marine service folks are still allowed to splash boats, and we are still allowed to be out there. These rules are state-by-state in the US; and they can change at any time. Wheels et al make a good point about recreational boaters tying up rescue/first responder resources. Your attitude of "all in this together" will get you through it. Love ya to
  5. Come on now Mr. Knot, you do have an interesting perspective - well, mostly But you need to be respectful and play nice For myself, I'd like you to be able to stick around for a while. (On lockdown here by the Sweetwater Seas, the Admiral and I have been watching a good bit of old US film "noir' on YouTube. Dark stuff, a lot of it) May you find peace, or peace find you - whichever comes first
  6. I'm tellin' ya I've got a million of them ! or para tu esposa . . Te digo que tnego un millon de ellas ! With apologies to James Durante - long ago humor.
  7. Speaking as your pet gringo - only one account
  8. The best advice above is to buy a well maintained and well equipped boat. If you compare the actual costs of a boat that needs sails, motor, rigging (standing/running), winches, canvas, and costs $ 15K to a boat that needs none of that and costs $ 35K - the latter is nearly always less expensive once you add it all up. Well over half of all "project" boats are never completed.
  9. I have a Nissan 6hp 4 stroke extra long shaft on my 4400 pound keeler - does the job getting in and out of the marina, or as an iron genny when the wind dies. But when I checked on y-tube for how to change the impeller, the long shaft made it seem almost impossible, so I went with my mechanic guy - he did it for $ 180 USD. You really don't want the impeller to come apart and start shedding rubber bits in your cooling system. Good luck, and stop by the Sweetwater Seas sometime.
  10. Sure hope this gets sorted quickly . . Would not want to miss any of those brilliant posts from the climate denialists.
  11. Don't be in a huge hurry - and watch out for the "starry eyed" syndrome. Take a knowledgeable person along with you to look at the boat. When you are in love (with either boat or woman), It's hard to be sufficiently skeptical don't ask me how I know - re boat, that is. I got a great deal on a woman.
  12. Sort of like nautical sand flies ? Oh, the humanity !!
  13. Well, our sailing season is over, and "Class Struggle" is in storage - until about April. So I do quite a bit of reading - just finished "The Sea People" by C. Thompson about the Polynesians - mostly where they came from, and the history of research into that question. a good deal of it concerns Aotearoa Knowing what big readers Kiwis are, I thought I'd pass it along.
  14. MEK is strong stuff - I'd wear a respirator
  15. just got results back from two more skin biopsies - negative this time, but I've had positive ones with surgery too. And yeah, it's mostly from stupid stuff I did decades ago. We're trying to do better with the grandkids - don't let them get all browned up like we used to do. Go the AB's - I'm even starting to understand the rules a bit
  16. condolences, and kudos to the rescue services
  17. And don't miss the Canadian canoe museum in Peterborough, Ontario https://canoemuseum.ca/
  18. What's the issue ? Are you concerned that the paparazzi will find you ?
  19. Generally during our night races, and for those of us sailing at night, . . we run with every light we have illuminated - steaming, anchor, running - all of them often we are able to spot a converging boat first by their masthead light (white, tri, whatever) Let there be light !!
  20. A true girly girl !! Hats off to her and all her elk !!
  21. The vast majority of Kiwis are gracious and thoughtful . . but over the years I did run into a few Colonel Blimp types like the Commodore. (A bit later . . ) And wow, I did not know that the Blimp creator was a Kiwi !! Wiki "Blimp was a satire on the reactionary opinions of the British establishment of the 1930s and 1940s. The cartoon was intended to criticize attitudes of isolationism, impatience with the concerns of common people, and a lack of enthusiasm for democracy. These were attitudes which Low, a New Zealander, considered as being common in British politics.[2] Althoug
  22. We had a microburst hit our fleet during a beer-can race some years back . . A clump of about 8 keelers (24 to 35 feet) were all knocked down - all masts in the water, tangled rigs, lots of lamentations !! It came up in minutes, really no warning 500 yards away, where we were fortunately, puffs were nowhere near as fierce. Glad y'all are OK !!
  23. Most excellent vid - thanks for posting
