SSANZ Safety at Sea Triple Series

Recommended Posts

Have done so Booboo me boy - maybe next year after a lotto win we'll be in the Sportsboats division bristling with Carbon stick, Square top and ridiculously oversized Gennakers ha ha!

For now, we've at least got a couple of other 830's to square up against for the first time.

We just want to race boats similar in specification and gear to ourselves so we entered the traditional keeler Div as we are one. But it seems someone decided we had to take our knife and play in the machine gun division instead.

Next year it'll still be a knife KM - a big f$&k off Samurai sword though!

Ummmm... Who would have thought that a Yamaha 8 at full tit would only make 3 knots SOG from the Weiti to northern leading into a 30 knot southerly haha

We were on the back foot from minute 1, to add insult to injury the bloody multis seemed to revel in the cracked sheet fetch off the line! Tough luck to Neil on the post race inspection RIB whom missed the 8 day old fluff in my Bellybutton.... Top marks to the SSANZ crew for their safety focus!

Great course for the multis.

Reach on the start. Good to see the big Slime and Taiping battling it out. The bigger cats and the foiler would have had a lot on.

Tight sail to Gannet rock. From Gannet to Shearer Rock Buoy was the real test. There seemed to be more wind and waves further out. Pushed it very hard. So much fun that we went to far past the buoy and lost to Voom and Tigre.

Back up around Motutap. The tri Push Play trucked passed us with unprecedented upwind speed and poor Tigre had a problem with their headsail.

Nice little reach through the channel on flat water, pipped Push Play

Thanks SSANZ.

Provincial Cowboy SSANZ 60.

SSANZ Race 1 2016. Not a great day for us really. Plenty of wind forecast so we reefed before the start and decided to be cautious. As a result we weren't particularly quick for the first reach out past Motutapu and run down towards Rakino. At this stage we were in close company with Lawless, Whitebait, Activator and a couple of other boats. I thought it was too dangerous to rely on the autohelm in all the big wakes where we could have easily hit someone so we aborted the hoist of a gennaker for what was a short run. Again a bit costly as we couldn't bridge the gap to Nosaka (who sailed really well all day) and the other bunch just ahead. Josh and Damon got shafted here, parked for 5 minutes in their own little hole under Rakino while no one else seemed to really stop. Next we broke the slide off the mainsail headboard which made for a very weird mainsail setup and which was a bit concerning. Pressed on but kept the mainsheet load down. Then broke the tiller extension after Shag Island which led to a big broach and a few dramas trying to lash something up. Also busted the main hatch cover somehow in that lie down, not sure how that happened really. Anyway, after sorting that out, we overlaid Shearer Rock in a big way and let a few boats through as we came in hot and low. Then a tangled sock retriever line on the drop...sigh. Just made sure we got home after that, passed Titanium around Rakino which was nice. Finally shook out the reef and held them off down the finish as they came up behind under a nice little FRO. In between all the dramas it was a good days yachting. Finally after the finish we got a rope round the prop (the bloody kite sheet came unclipped from the bow somehow, didn't see it in the dark - a trap for young players that!) after the finish and had a nice tow home from the very nice and efficient Coastguard folks! No sail damage other than the slide and nothing major so we'll just sort the other stuff out and move on.... Thanks SSANZ.

FLC: I'll be missing the 100 (boat might still go out, up in the air at the moment) so looking forward to the 50 for the next 3-way owner-driver Ross 830 battle, set your alarm clock :)

We were there early enough to make it easy but due to the 0445 low there wasn't enough water over the bar between the wave crests to make getting out viable!

You guys must have been flying - well done just forget about us next time and knock that Elliott off the top spot

Quick report and a bit of amateur onboard multimedia from the 88 fleet.....

Great race. Even if it was a bit of a soldiers course there were still passing lanes.

Lay through to Gannet trying not to get too stuffed by the slow overtakers, various degrees of cluster F#$%k hoisting round Gannet, but a 9.5 for Sailor Moon who cut the corner and were off.  Breeze kicked in for the beat back to Rakino and the short rock hopping tacks round Motutapu followed by a "leisurely"  Rum Reach down to the finish

Congrats to Jacko for a convincing line honours win.

Line
1 Sailor Moon
2 War Machine
3 Crowded House

Handicap
1 Crowded House
3= Sailor Moon and War Machine with Legless only 6 seconds behind.

Predict Wind tracker can be found at this link http://forecast.predictwind.com/tracking/race/ssanz but with so many boats in our division it is a bit hard to use and the usually techy kids at home couldn't make head or tail of it..

SSANZ did usual great job and it looks like the format change worked in getting more fleet entries from 88's and 1020s.

See y'all in a month

Looking at the PW tracker, Revolution Blues lost ground to Moving Violation, by sailing too high to Shearer Rock.

RB closed the gap by going into Waakalabubu bay, but MV took off in the lighter conditions after Emu point.

Sun Fast 3600 Racing’s  SSANZ NZ Spars and Rigging 60 Race Report.

With the promise of some decent breeze we were really looking forward to getting out there, this boat just loves a windy day!

We got a great start at the boat end, right on the line with the code zero and full main set. This was a great combo and got us out of the blocks really well. We peeled to the mast head spinnaker at home bay as we had worked out that the last ¾ of the run down to Rakino was going to be very flat off. During the peel from the zero to the spinnaker the sheet got caught up forward on the chainplates, not a big issue but while Damon was up furling the zero I couldn’t put the bow up until the sheet was free, with this we gave away a bit to much weather ground and had a bit of a battle to clear the reef off the eastern end of Home bay and had to flap the kite a few times to get around. No real loss but potential to damage gear. Once around we made some big gains on the fleet who were all pretty hesitant to hoist (we thought our tactic of making it look really hard might have put a few people off...). A couple of boats had hoisted gennakers which worked for the first bit but became pretty soggy towards the end. A tidy drop off woody bay and we were set to go around in some good company. Unfortunately we found a big hole here and stopped dead for a few minutes. Annoying when the boats on the same line in front and behind get through in good breeze. A bit of a loss but just bad timing and not much we could have done so we got over it pretty quickly. We settled into the long up wind lay to Thumb Point keeping the boat in a fast upwind mode as we wanted to stay high to get the right handers out of the Waiheke bays but keep pushing forward. A few boats had gone into a really high slow mode and others into a low fast mode so there was some separation starting to happen. The boats that had to tack to clear Maria Island really lost a whole bunch on us and the guys who were high and slow had dropped back a bit too. We were happy with our placement with the fleet and the mode we were in. We had to hold high to clear Durville Rock but this worked well as some other boats had gone low to dip it and this gave us clear air and some leverage above them which really paid for the last bit. After clearing Waiheke we went into a normal upwind mode in the 20kt breeze and short chop. The boat felt really good vang sheeted with high traveller and loads of twist on both main and jib. Numbers were in the mid 7s with height to burn on every other boat around us. Once we can dig that chine in she sits on rails and flys upwind. On port tack we were punching straight into the waves so had to sail a bit faster with even more twist to keep the boat going fast. We really seemed to gain on a few boats and put time on Activator and Power play on this leg with Lawless and Higher ground only just ahead. The rest of our fleet was tucked nicely behind. We did a nice early set to the spinnaker at Shag island  and ran the 180 highway down the guts of it to Gannett Rock surfing to 14kts at times but a constant 9-10kts. Higher ground a few others had gone really wide doing big angles, this didn’t look like a good thing to do and we just wanted to do the shortest distance possible. Our crossover is a solid 25kts before we put the bow up and take the speed gains for a better VMG but any breeze below that we are best to just cover the least distance and keep the bow down. Feels sluggish but 9-10kts directly at the mark has proved to be the best for us. Lawless didn’t hoist for quite a while and we soaked inside and past them before they got an extra on. Powerplay had some bad luck on the hoist and blew out their spinnaker so lost a bit before changing to the fractional. We gybed not far from Ganett Rock as it looked like better breeze inshore and were heading straight for Shearers. Power play and Nosaka were starting to reel us in down the run but that was always going to happen so we were not concerned. We just managed to hold them off to Shearers Rock and went around after a clean spinnaker drop about 15min behind behind Anarchy. The boat found the groove pretty quickly with Powerplay and Nosaka breathing down our necks. We found some nice tidal back eddies on the Motutapu shore and managed to slowly pull away up the beat. At Emu Rock we went to the code zero for the beam reach to the finish and took the gun smoke for Division 2 and 5th on line out of all the long haul boats. The next boat in our division was 30minutes behind, that was enough to give us the double line and handicap win.

Good result and a great day on the water. We learnt a lot more about what makes the boat go and also played around with the Auto pilot settings to see what it was capable of downwind and reaching. This is all build up for the RNI race in February so we are learning and taking notes to create the Sun fast ‘play book’. Damon’s list making skills were put to the test with some really important things added such as a light weight chopping board for cutting lime’s to go with the Rum and Sodas and some padding on all the lockers to stop the vibrations from the Subwoofer, its all the small things that add up.

The after party was substantial with what seemed like half the fleet on board the Sun Fast at one stage. Crews from Higher Ground, Crusader, Hard Labour, Promise, Big Bickies, Satchmo, Protocol, Waka, Powerplay and a few others coming over for a  debrief and to compare notes. I have even heard reports of one crew evacuating out the forward hatch as it was too crowded to get aft....

Thanks to Damon Jolliffe (Motorboat) for the good times once again.
