Sail Rock 28
I'm considering a wee sail from AKL to White Island this Easter. I know there is nowhere suitable to anchor overnight there so will probably just stooge around for a few hours, try a bit of fishing and possibly anchor in the lee of the island for a bit of a rest before returning home (if the sulphur fumes aren't too bad). would be interested to hear from anyone who has been there. Jon 355
Raced around it 4 times now Most times there have been boats anchored either just north or south of NE point which has been the widward side but they were in flat water and no wind in close The heat coming off it defiantly creates its own micro climate, often no wind up to a mile out, I wouldn't worry about the Sulfur unless it's actually erupting, but equally I wouldn't anchor downwind from the crater either Next time I go it will be to fish, there is always lots of sea life about. S.M.U. 15
Sailed down there last weekend, loverly blue ocean and real cool to take a picture of the famous island as I sailed past. Not as much sea life as I would have expected. A lot of Selp (not sure if this is correct name, jellyfish like things!!).
wheels 543
Yes be careful of the fumes. Some people can have severe asthma like problems with it and if it is bad enough, it has been known to etch pits in masts and paint.
Battleship 100
The fumes aren't bad a bit like rotorua, you can smell it a long way out if the wind is blowing toward you. Have always seen a few Fishing boats sheltering where Jon said.
Deep Purple 511
Pretty barren place. I'm not sure anchoring anywhere other than where you probably shouldn't anchor is an option.
