Went in over the Parengarenga Bar and overnighted there a couple of weeks ago. We had ideal conditions with a very light SW. There were still breakers on the bar and the south side spit with about a half metre swell. We arrived at the bar with 2 hours of tide in at dawn and just watched the bar for about an hour. Sent a man halfway up the mast and headed in skirting the break on the spit. The gap to the breakers in the middle of the bar would have been about 100m or less. The depth came up very quickly to about 4.5m minimum and we soon angled to the right to find deeper water inside the outside break. A little further in about level with the dunes the gap in the breakers was only about 50m but the water was deep, turbulent and running at 3 knots. Once past this narrow part there was some shallowing back to about 4.5m and we angled left towards the sandhills and dropped into the channel proper where there is plenty of water and just followed the plotter around to the left channel and anchored in a sheltered spot with about 8m of water. The plotter could not really be relied upon on the outer bar as it has shifted a bit from when the chart was made. Mark 1 eyeball was the answer. Up the mast was not a lot of use either as the sand was quite stirred up by the current. We draw 2.1 m and had no problems and it was definitely a buzz to visit the place. I would not attempt it though in any bad weather particularly with any easterly. It would also be easy to be trapped there. We went out again at low water no problem with a least depth of about 4m.
