Queens Wharf Dolphins - Give us more ammo

Recommended Posts

Rehab, No AC boats or AC marina will ever berth at the subject of this thread, take that AC stuff elsewhere please.

The Appeal process starts today. Team AYBA is there with a large group of other organisations from all over the city.

Next time you see any AYBA committee, thank them for putting the time, effort and coin into helping us all retain the harbour.

AYBA = Auckland Yacht and Boating Association.

KM...MB

It is not Americas cup stuff. It is material for the environment court and mediation to consider that is entirely relevant. You asked for more ammo

The harbour is not being retained. It's being filled with concrete marinas and stuff. You cannot pick and choose who can pour concrete, push in piles, fingers, legs, moorings, extensions and who cannot into the harbour.

Guests also read this post, which could be all concerned.

There is no need to retain, dredge or doing anything like that if they get the OK to build the wharf extension.

If it gets built or not will not be influenced by the AC, it is not going to affect any plans for that.

So I can't see why anything AC will be of any concern to the EC.

But hey, ya never know.

More on them here for those not up with it.  http://crew.org.nz/forum/index.php/topic/15963-here-we-go-again/?hl=wynyard%20wharf

Basically the council is spending a huge pile to then try and spend a huge pile more to extend Queens Wharf by 90mts more out into the harbour. They are calling them Dolphins with a access gang plank. The gang plank is 2mts wide and has a pile of piles under it, it's no gangplank it's a jetty if not a wharf in it's own right. The story is the gang plank is access for the dock workers when line handling on arrival and departures.

The niggle is the council have been under pressure by the cruise lines to do this or they say 'we will not come to Akl if we have to hover mid stream'. All a little blackmail like considering the ships go to a huge pile of destinations where they can not berth along side, they decided to build massive ships for their own balance sheet and it goes a bit against the growing trend worldwide to limit the number of ship visits due to the fast expanding numbers of them, environmental concerns and a few other bits n bobs. Plus we all lose more of the harbour...again!!!!

We are talking the largest newer ships here, not most that do and have visited NZ.

In the councils 'extensive' consultation they spoke to some iwi's, the ferry operators and the harbour master. Hardly a representative group of harbour users. Recreational was never spoken to or considered, the report simply says 'It's inside an exclusion zone so recreational never go in there so we have no need to consider them' {translated from report speak}. At a meeting with Panuku I did point out it was plainly obvious the expensive report was written by someone who has never seen Auckland harbour.

It's now getting very serious and there is a big hearing next week. There is a group (a combination of the AYBA, AMUA, WMUA, PCC, RYC and Squaddy) who are sending representatives to speak to aspects of the proposal, along with other submitters of course. This group is against the plan and while not against ship visits we do not want to lose more harbour so we will be explaining why and presenting options that get the same end result but are less harbour invasive.

So tell us more about your opinions and thoughts on this. Give us more ammo.

It looks like they could be changing direction. Costs are spiralling vertically rapidly. The alternative costs probably matching the increase rate.

It probably means  AC and super yacht marina's cost are increasing / spiralling upwards at the same rate or higher and faster the costs, would not trust the report though. The report said they where only looking at it [ the alternative to move the cars from the wharf by barge, nothing definite re the dolphins except Goff's state and acknowledgement by P.O.A. So it has not been costed. Why not by cars haulers to some where else. Why Barge.

These big cruise ships are super safe, I see no issues at all bringing them down the Rangi Channel and parking them in downtown Auckland. Super reliable. Don't even need their own tugs for parking...

A cruise ship trying to leave Wellington harbour has called for assistance after suffering mechanical issues.

The Ovation of the Seas - the largest cruise ship to regularly visit Wellington - came into trouble Monday evening.

Harbour master Grant Nalder told Stuff the ship called for tugs just after 7.30pm while it was exiting the harbour, just off the coast of Seatoun.

"The situation is evolving," he said.

An issue with the propulsion engines caused the ship to stop, according to Nalder.

Two CentrePort tugs were holding the ship, carrying just over 6000 people, in place while the problem was being investigated.

"She is the middle of the channel, so she is not in any danger," he said.

Is the Wellington Harbour entrance channel, just off Seatoun, is that very far from where the Wahine sunk?

The mayor and councillors once again to scared to increase rates and it make easier for them to be paid. Like automatic payments deducted from their pay weekly or FN. Borrow cheap finance from O/S. Seems a ploy to bait the government into giving more money to Aucklanders in the name of saving jobs. Increase the rates to what every it takes and other chargers, (public transport to the true costs including depreciation and replacements.) like the commercial sector and air NZ have to.

If you're talking charging users the true costs then wait until people driving have to pay the true costs of roads and parking. There's an awful lot of public space being used and maintained that if user pays was brought to bear would cause many some considerable financial pain.

What about the people employed by the council that will  loose their jobs that will experience a lot more hardships. What happened to the catch cry we r all in this together?

Cancel the AC for 3 years minimum.

People where quick to que for a beer and coffee they could easily continue to have at home, quick to rush to KFC  when they could eat at home, have a beer at home, buy a thermal flask and take their coffee with them to work.

They seem to have money to hire camper vans to take the kids on a holiday this Q B P. H. if TV 1 story is a fair indication of Aucklanders attitudes.

Increase the Auckland regional petrol tax by another 40 cents a litre,

Increase the parking fees on meters by 200% and in parking buildings,

Increase the rates on commercial industrial premises and make easier to pay by installments, additionally by all NZ Council's.

Plus a lot of other Auckland services. Is some of the things the Auckland Council and the Mayor could do and be less callous, The Mayor and councilors could take a 50% pay cut for 3years.and cut entertainment expenses.
