Looks like your government is taking strong measures . .

That's what people are saying.

Seriously though, we hope it works for ya.

Geography is on your side in this instance at least

Well its stepped a major notch,No cruise ships to enter NZ all to self isolate days except those from pacific islands.

too little too late. Ardern is telling porkies yet again claiming these are the toughest measures in the world. Not even close, the government has been way behind the game right from the start of this epidemic. Remember cases no 1 and 2 were both people coming from seriously infected countries (Iran and Italy respectively), were showing signs of illness on arrival yet were allowed to enter the country without any checks and in the case of no 2 the woman subsequently travelled within NZ for meetings and her husband attended a concert.

We need to limit entry to the country to returning citizens only and make screening checks on all arrivals. No visitors and anyway what visitor is immediately going to self isolate themselves on arrival for 14 days.

Just about all European countries are closing their borders. Australia is considering it. Also news from Australia is that the reagent required for testing is running low there. Would not be surprised if the situation is similar in NZ, especially as there are hints that health authorities here have turned sick people away from testing.

I had a really bad Flu/Cold starting about 5 or 6 weeks ago. I was thinking to myself at time, what a weird time of the year to get a Flu and I haven't been around anybody much at all and certainly no one I knew of with a Cold. I had been digging in Soil landscaping around home. My symptoms started off with ulcers in the Throat for a few week and thought maybe I had picked up a bacteria from the Soil. It then developing into a decent Cold. Then Chest infection and fever and I got pretty miserable. Man Flu symptoms of course. I am susceptible to chest infections and have to be mindful of that and so was onto it with cough mixture and so on.. After being quite bad for 4 weeks, I went and saw my Dr. Dr jokingly asked if I had been to Wuhan and we both laughed and that was that. The Dr confirmed it was Viral and not something bacteria I could have got from the Soil. He said my lungs sounded OK and keep up what I was dong and gave me stuff for my throat
.
Anyway, it turns out that a work mate had a Cold at ruffly the same time and perhaps just a week before me. Not exactly sure as I wasn't paying a lot of thought to it back then. He was experiencing just mild symptoms and wasn't totally sure it was a Cold even, but perhaps hay fever or something.
However, just last week, I find out a bit more of the story. Last Friday we had been discussing C19 and he tells me that before we both got symptoms, he had been sitting in a Sauna next to another Guy that had not long returned from a trip to China. I was like "SAY WHAT?" and asked why he didn't say anything sooner. I would certainly have mentioned it to my Dr. Then again, with all the Quarantine business, maybe not saying was a better choice. And thankfully my wife never caught it.

You cant be serious? Up until a week ago the zeitgeist in NZ was she'll be right. Its hard to get people to rethink and act differently but the proverbial penny has dropped. I saw an article on Saturday in the Herald by a right wing columnist (aren't they all) questioning the wisdom of Arderns border policy calling it a cheap political move and questioning why we are hurting business unnecessarily!

Seems that all the papers care about is an abstract called "the economy" not real people.

I agree, we are not tough enough, we should pull up the moat and no entry at all unless youre proven covid free, heat scanners at the airport, massive fine if you're caught not self isolating etc. We should be ahead of the curve and all of us need to pull our collective heads in and act in the best interest of our community.

more on "flattening the curve" with some real data about hospital beds

https://thebfd.co.nz/2020/03/the-prime-minsters-plan-to-flatten-the-curve-is-an-impossible-dream/

and re-emphasising general advice (which is reinforced by my "admiral" who is a very experienced respiratory specialist and dealt with alot of H1N1 cases in Brazil)

https://thebfd.co.nz/2020/03/the-community-must-play-its-part-if-the-vulnerable-are-to-have-a-fighting-chance-to-survive-this-pandemic/

Another thought for those who indulge in higher risk sports and other activities, like my riding a motor bike, best not to do so for the foreseeable future because the last thing you need is an injury requiring hospitalisation - every bed needs to be regarded as precious and hospital is not a good place to be (well not now or at any time).

I can see short handed racing becoming very popular this winter...

I doubt clubs will get a very good turnout for the prize giving afterwards though, unless they do it remotely via the interweb.

Seriously though, with so much sport being cancelled, I think sailing without large crew is the only way to having any form of sporting competition over the next wee while. Esp how Ssanz is already set up, with a 'vertial club', on the internet. They'll have to cancel the compulsory Triple series briefing (or do it via video conference / Facebook live feed), but other than that, lets go sailing!

A little more to add to my earlier story and slightly shocked and surprised by the local medical proffesionals response.

I just popped into the workshop this morning and got talking to the other guy that had the Cold when I did. His wife has now come down with it, but she her symptoms are far worse than his and more similar to me. She got sick last Friday and sounds dreadful today.

Yesterday She called her medical centre and they asked her what her symptoms were. She replied sort throat, croaky voice, fell terrible and all the usuals of a real bad cold etc etc. should I come in. No they replied. But it doesn't sound like the symptoms of COVID19. (I thought HUH?!?!?!) But you perhpas should self quarantine. She replied, but I have been sick since last week, isn't that a bit late now. So now they have told her she should be fine to go back to work if she wants. Yes you did read above correctly, that she works at a school.

The medical centre can't test her till Wednesday.

I was rather stunned when I heard all this. Surely if they can't test and confirm if it is positive or negative, they would be telling her don't go near any school for goodness sake. And I had thought that her symptoms (similar to what we all have just had, were exactly the symptoms of C19. I know that many reports say that some experience other symptoms like Vomiting and stumoch issues etc. But not all every case reported this.

So it will be interesting to see if we have a Flu/Cold work through a local School in the next few weeks.
