with the government/authorities knowing for weeks how the virus was entering the country

Yes, Govt. by PR spin. Gives a great speech, but everything that happens is too little too late.

The police commissioner on tv this morning everything is now banned, walking to beach/park unnecessary driving etc.
STAY HOME is the message.

What happens if somebody wants to go for a drive, say to a local beach or get out and about to a local park?

There's a short answer to that - no they're not. You only go out in your vehicle if you need to go and get essential food supplies, essential medical supplies or medical treatment. Otherwise, please stay at home.

Pretty obvious that gas stations will be one of the main vectors of transmission . So if you only go to supermarket twice a week you won’t be gassing up very often . If you went jet skiing , fishing , hunting, motorcycling you are increasing your visits massively along with all the other people doing the same .

if all the people within walking distance of an Auckland , Wellington or any other coastal  town beach head there that’s several hundred  , or if in auck thousand peeps . If everyone else drives there too that’s getting bloody crowded and would be reminiscent of Bondi a few days ago when they shut it down

for what its is worth, this is what the government web site https://covid19.govt.nz/government-actions/covid-19-alert-level/ currently has to say. Seem to be mixed messages....

Recreation or exercise

  • You can go for a walk, run, or bike ride. Exercise is good for people’s mental health.
  • If you do, it must be solitary, or with those you live with.
  • Keep a 2 metre distance.
  • However, if you are unwell, do NOT go outside.
  • DOC has closed all its campsites and huts.
  • Do not go hunting or hiking, and especially not on overnight trips

Police commissioner has over ruled any of that.Stay home, you will get cautionary 1st time around.

How will it be enforced?

Compliance with the lockdown will be enforced by the police and the New Zealand Defence Force.

Police Commissioner Mike Bush, who is on the Government's lockdown taskforce, said Kiwis could expect to see a strong police presence on the street.

There is likely to also be some military presence.

"I can understand that seeing an increase in presence by police and our military may not be what we're used to in New Zealand, but they will be working together," Ardern said.

Authorities have the power to enforce the lockdown if they see people flouting the rules.

Bush said: "It's about education and encouragement. We don't want to get into a place where we have to enforce these directions, but we will if required."

The Government is also looking at measures to enforce quarantine on people who refuse to, director-general of health Ashley Bloomfield said.

There were people who weren't complying already, we've engaged with a few of those, given them some advice ... you won't believe it but some people were saying they were unaware of these conditions," he said.

"People were out driving around, just having fun, people were visiting ATMs, things like that."

He said anyone found to be in these circumstances would be met with the "friendly face of police".

"We'll be ensuring people comply because if they don't people will die, it's as simple as that."

If essential workers were heading to work it pays to carry their ID, he said. While they don't anticipate setting up roadblocks, police will be present on road sides.

The entire country was being monitored, but if any specific areas or regions were found to have increased activity then police would deploy teams there, he said.

"The powers ... also authorise us to go into places, so if we suspect there are gatherings inside places we're [usually] unable to go in there, we'll be doing everything we can to ensure people comply."
