Nasty, but impressive it got back to dock, Unaided? What exactly are the rules for cat 3 bulkheads etc for multi's? If the rules are on-line, can someone post a link please?

 

 

YNZ SAFETY REGS:

 

 

7.5 (M) A multihull yacht shall be provided with

sufficient positive buoyancy to support

herself with crew and stores when in a

capsized and/or waterlogged condition. X X X X X

 

7.6 (M) Any hull in which there is no living

accommodation shall have at least two

water-tight transverse bulkheads and the

distance between the two transverse watertight

bulkheads shall not exceed 4 metres. X X

 

7.7 (M) All multihulls shall have a water-tight

bulkhead between 5 and 15% of the vessel’s

waterline length from the bow. X X

 

7.8 (M) All hulls of multihulls shall have sufficient

inbuilt buoyancy or sufficient water-tight

transverse bulkheads to ensure adequate

freeboard and stability in the event of any

one compartment being flooded. Transverse

water-tight bulkheads other than collision

bulkheads may be fitted with water-tight

sh*t that top photo really makes it clear. You got seriously whacked eh. I'm pleased that you guys got it and yourselves back in good shape albeit with bruised kajones.

 

As a wannabe multihuller I am incensed that this happened! I hope the repair goes smoothly and quickly for you.

Yeah we have heard them all dont worry, along the lines of "A few ofthe stewart owners wanting to get into the multihull fleet shortly, oops they just did..." and that it will just buff right out.

 

Anyhow a few interesting lessons learnt and a realisation that while the boats are strong they arent bumpercars and are fragile too. Bit of a bugger of a way to start the regatta but a big thanks to the Squadron Fosters Chaseboat and to Coastguard for their prompt response and great handling of the situation. And a thanks to Ashbys boat yard for all the boys dropping everything and getting the boat out of the water for us ASAP.

it certainly has not been our regatta !

 

Dunno Mikey we left undefeated and didnt trawl the kite once... Although it still got wet. :shock:

 

I did love the call the Coastguard boat said with the bilge pumps. Jumps on and says "We got a pump that will get that water out. it pumps 600lts a minute" well aftter 5 minutes he comes back and says "I think the pump is fighting a losing battle!" and turned it off. Was pretty funny.

FARK, that's a big hole and a equally big BUGGER.

After sussing the new photos - what I said above.

 

I am quite impressed with the targeting, 100mm left and one of the buoyancy tanks would be looking 2nd hand. The photos do show she was well build with the carnage clearly stopping at the frames etc, that's handy.

 

Why does shite like this always seem to happen on day 1 of a regatta?

Because by day 2 and 3:

- there are fewer boats on the start lines due to the previous days' carnage

- everyone is leaving a huge amount of space around the prime suspects

- half the fleet knows they have no chance of winning and are just out there for fun, and finally

- three/four nights solid rum drinking has mellowed everyone into a nice peaceful groove.
