NZI Insurance - Changes to Racing Cover

Hey All, just a word of warning to those with NZI boat insurance that they have changed their policy and now only cover non spinnaker racing and you need an additional racing cover if your racing with extras.

I only discovered this on the off chance and non of my mates who are with NZI knew that this had been change too. Did anyone get any notice?

Spinnakers are extras? :problem: Wow - I thought if your boat was designed to be sailed with a spinnaker it would not be an extra. . . I guess the gennie is an extra too. What about a genoa?

And to add to that - if your boat is designed to race with 4 gorillas on the rail and you have 6 - are you not covered also? Or - if the above is true, and you are racing short handed - like only one gorilla on the rail - covered or not? :?

Food for thought . . .

Megwyn

that is a picture of Aihe, isn't it, as your monicker/avatar?

what is the story ?

Last time I raced Aihe she won the round Waiheke race on Handicap.

Yes Mr Wolf - it is Aihe - excellent spotting!

The story is not at all exciting - unfortunately.

A couple of years ago, she caught my attention - she was advertised on TM. We noted that she was in Whangamata harbour in the photos, and then noted that indeed she was still there. When staying at Whanga, I took my kayak out one morning and paddled around her - I was really impressed. Would have loved to take a closer look at her, but would only have been tyre kicking as we did not have the money to buy her.

We were hoping she would remain on the market until we did have the money, but unfortunately she either sold, or was taken off the market. I note she is no longer in Whanga's.

I have her as my avatar, because she is, at the moment, my dream boat. If you know how we can get our hands on her when we sell our house, I would be the happiest person on the planet.

Bonus - the boss loves her too!

if you are coming up for renewal then get a specialist marine broker to quote you, most people I have spoken to since are suprised that we could get a 30k boat insured for $110 a year, our racing premium was an additional 100% on top but still the total was cheaper than most and that was with NZI

I am a Broker and I would certainly suggest speaking to yours about your Cover. There are many options and all look at different classes of risk based on their own past history, Some like Multis, some don't, some like racing, some love it, others do not understand it. So depends on what you are doing and where you are Moored/Berthed.

Of course your own history will have an effect on rates as well

If you want to save a bob, talk various excess etc.
