Paper Tiger racing gets underway for the new season

While one group of Multihull enthusiasts will be blasting their way north towards the Bay of Islands in the Coastal Classic this weekend, another equally ethusiactic group will be heading south to Lake Wairarapa for the first event in the 2012-13 Paper Tiger North Island Freshwater Series.

The 2012-13 Paper Tiger North Island Freshwater Series kicks off this weekend with the Horowhenua Cup being hosted by the Horowhenua Sailing Club, but sailed on Lake Wairarapa (yes it is confusing).

The event will see over 25 Paper Tigers from all over the North Island competing in spectacular fashion on Lake Wairarapa with racing expected to produce some very tight results.

The event will see competitors throughout the fleet fighting for every position as they attempt to take home the Horowhenua Cup as well as gain points towards the overall North Island Freshwater Series Title which concludes in Taupo mid March 2013.

Contenders for the Cup include class stalwart Peter Robins, as well as a bunch of other up and coming sailors including Scott Barker, Scott Pedersen and Mike Hood if he brings the full package.

The regatta will as always be a friendly and sociable event with most competitors camping on the grass area next to the club and a dinner organised for everyone to attend on the Saturday evening so that war stories from the day (as well as years gone by) can be exchanged.

The Paper Tiger North Island Freshwater Series is regatta series held over four regattas around the North Island (Lake Wairarapa, Lake Ngaroto, Turangi, and Taupo) during the season.

Points are tallied at each regatta with the overall series winner is calculated by allowing each sailor to count 3 regattas from the 4 in the series.

The Paper Tiger is a catamaran designed by Ron Given of New Zealand in 1968. It is widely sailed in New Zealand and Australia.

"Paper Tiger racing gets underway for the new season"...

If only...., however;

Award for first gear breakage goes to Rowdy (without even getting wet!)

Award for at least trying goes to Rob, Scottie, Hoody (& PRO Paul).

Award for fastest moving object at the lake goes to Scottie's tent (and everything in it!).

I didn't even manage to get changed into my sailing gear! :cry:

But it was an awesome weekend anyway, one of those regattas that will be remembered for years to come.

Probably because of the number of tents blown apart and the 15 odd people that ended up sleeping in the club.

hey guys

Thinking of getting rid of the DOYLE and getting in touch with colman tents to make me a new rag. If Bad Boy moved that fast i'll be untouchable not sure if it will measure though.
