  2. 10sec on Google Are Hector's dolphins endangered? Endangered (Population decreasing) Hector's dolphin/Conservation status There has been a 74% overall Hector's dolphin decline and a 90% loss for Māui dolphin over just three generations. Hector's dolphins
  3. All pure speculation. If the population is decreasing ( as it has been for quite a while) we can say with a lot of certainty that mortality exceeds fertility and they are at risk of extinction, certainly endangered.
  4. Oh so obvious ... How did I miss that.

But there isn't any science in this issue. Coutts has been told he can't hold SailGP in Feb cause of dolphins. We aren't talking nuclear fusion of metaphysics here. At best we are talking local bylaws, in that he wants to hold a yacht race in a commercial port, that also has a legislative overlay as a marine sanctuary. We are told the dolphins are endangered. 'Endangered' isn't a scientific fact, it is a human construct based on opinion. Sure the death rate might be higher than the birth rate, then again it might not be (I haven't seen the peer reviewed scientific report), but
  7. You made the right call
  8. I was on Hotdogger 2-up and I can give you the scoop. We started late because we were debating going to the third reef. I think the time we spent stooging about didn't help the top batten cars in their efforts to live a long and prosperous life. We elected to start, and in the midst of sideways rain and a jib hank that had let go we didn't really look up and notice the issue. After tacking at North Head we slid under Start me up (which was fully crewed but still a fellow small boat) we set off into the washing machine. 2 reefs and a #3 were still a bit too much sail for the over

No Yes, and you also pretty much did exactly the same with this statement in general. You took an idea (a subjective idea) presented it as a fact and made it general. The greatest issue with scientific studies is that science is hard and it does take a lot of knowledge, and brain power to evaluate the work - that’s why we use peer review, and don’t simply allow Larry and Sindy from X - formerly known at Twatter - and their millions of stupid idolisers to determine what’s true and what’s not. Popularity is not peer review. Additionally, many people are

  14. As sighted by my brother this afternoon
  15. is this a case in point? 😁
  16. Replaced a couple of Chico 40 rudder stocks about 22 years ago after one snapped flush with the hull North of NZ . Yes they were alloy and I dont believe that big a diameter. The first boat got towed back here and we put a new rudder on (with SS stock) then she went offshore another couple of years later and main bulkhead came away after rigging was slack so the occupants got off and I believe she washed up on a reef somewhere.
  17. Iwi, first it's dolphin whispering, and now they are running fishing vessels into the noises, what next!!! I guess they havent read the ammendment which has been law since 2014 https://www.legislation.govt.nz/act/public/2014/0060/latest/DLM4794424.html
  18. Are there any Raymarine boffins out there? I have an Element 12S... and an ST60 depth display unit (I had speed log but now rely on GPS and have removed the paddle wheel assembly) I would like to remove the ST60 display unit and display depth data on the Element instead. I beleive I have the B45 transducer and I would also like to install a remote GPS receiver. I am happy with just a reliable depth reading on the screen with the GPS....(I may consider some fish finder function if there is little cost difference in my options.) I am not all that Tech savvy on this subject, s
  19. Not saying this boat is, but many of the Iwi that were awarded quota then contract foreign boats and crew to fish it for them. There were HUGE problems with slave like conditions, brutality etc toward crews and what not. There was a series of news storeys some time ago (pre covid) about this. I believe those boats were from Korea or Taiwan. They were certainly bottom rung in terms of maintenance, age, crew welfare and what not. Iwi were washing their hands of the issues claiming it was intermederiares that were doing the chartering. Strangely various vested interests were keen to keep such car
  20. Am I bit naive? Do we have other nations fishing within NZs exclusive economic zone (EEZ)....? Specifically in the Hauraki Gulf....?
  21. Yesterday
  22. Reminds me of a certain French production cat owner who went for a swim in Neiafu ( 2017) and thought .. 'thats funny'. one rudder gone altogether , and it had slime on the broken rudder shaft ( flush with the hull).
  23. The colour represents speed. Green is about 10 knots. Red is about 2 knots. So hopefully they were going slow when they hit. But looks like they had a problem earlier on. Anyway the track is now moving north, so they may be off now.
  24. It the mortality rate exceeds the fertility rate by 1000 p a then in 15 years they are all gone. Permanently.
  25. What does the green and red represent on the track? would that be speed? If so it would appear they've been breaking down / going dark ship, getting it going again and breaking down again. Hopefully they have just drifted onto the Noises, which will be a whole lot easier to recover from than hitting it at speed.
  26. And Pipi will be supplying the Longhaul 140nm reach, reach, reach. boat for Jon Cunning bugger.
