• The Coastguard App: Access live Nowcasting, tide information, and detailed forecasts directly on your phone. You can download it and view support info at Coastguard New Zealand.
• MetService Marine: Check localized, real-time marine forecasts on the MetService Marine App.
• Maritime NZ Forecasts: Continuous marine weather forecasts are continuously broadcast by Maritime NZ on VHF Channel 16 at scheduled intervals (0533, 0733, 1333, 1733, and 2133 hours).
• Mobile Direct Dial: Call MetPhone at 0900 999 followed by your regional area code for the latest conditions.

Auckland Council recently identified ways to improve the Navigation Bylaw and Control.

We are inviting your feedback on the proposed changes, acknowledging your interest in Auckland’s waterways as a Mooring Licence holder.

About the Bylaw and Control

Vessels on Auckland’s navigable water provide enjoyment, enriching cultural experiences, sporting events and transportation. Every day, people use these waters for activities such as boating, kayaking, waka ama, kiteboarding, swimming, fishing, ferrying passengers and cargo.

The shared use of Auckland’s waterways brings risks. For example, the failure to wear personal flotation devices on small vessels, comply with safe boating rules, and unsafe vessel operation can lead to property damage, injury and loss of life.

Auckland Council manages these risks through the Navigation Bylaw 2021 and the Navigation Bylaw (Specific Areas and Conditions of Use) Control 2021, which set rules for vessel activity, safety equipment, events, moorings and large vessels. Council has reviewed these rules to ensure they continue to support safety on Auckland’s waterways.

Proposed changes to improve the navigation rules for Auckland

We have recently reviewed how the Navigation Bylaw and Control are working and identified opportunities for improvement. The proposed amendments include:

• requiring personal flotation devices to be worn on small vessels while underway to further reduce the risk of fatalities
• introducing rules to manage risks from emerging technologies and novel craft (for example, motorised hydrofoil boards, flight boards and tow foiling)
• updating legacy mooring licences so all licence holders are subject to consistent and fair terms and conditions
• incorporating long‑standing Harbourmaster Directions for the Ferry Terminal Basin to reduce space‑sharing conflicts between ferries and cruise ships
• establishing an exclusion zone for powered vessels around Auckland Airport to address aviation and maritime safety risks
• introducing new exclusion zones to better protect high‑use or sensitive areas, including Horne Rock, the Tāmaki River Rowing Precinct, the Harbour Bridge and Simpson Rock
• revoking 14 rarely used access lane controls.

What will happen with your feedback

A bylaw panel will consider public feedback and make any updates to the proposal in August 2026.

Next door to Lidgard house, the Kawau Boat Club bought their clubhouse from the squadron in 2024 for $635,000. That has a covenant that it remains in use as a yacht club, but Blakey said the land at Smelting House Bay could go into private hands.

At Cape Rodney they encountered 30 knot winds, 4m seas, the gooseneck broke, they lost the sheets on the genoa, and engine stopped working.

The conditions were so bad that the Mangawhai Coastguard parked their boat in Marsden Cove marina, instead of returning home.

The potential loss of reputation was so bad that the sailors had to seek anonymity, and have their names changed in press articles.
