Another Rangitoto question.... salt springs?

Recommended Posts

There’s a couple of areas missing from that map …Bombay hills and pukekohe have significant volcanic plateaus and cones . There’s also a volcanic plateau at Waimauku but I have no idea where the cone/s are .

northland has two volcanic fields , one it a fairly straight line from glenbervie (near tutukaka) which passes through the north end of suburban Whangarei and heads west all the way to maunganui bluff at the top of baileys beach .

the second one encompasses waitangi , kerikeri , waimate , kaihohe , with scattered cones all the any up to Kaeo so probably as large as Auckland’s field and it has a few active vents in pakaraka and ngawha which has a wee geothermal powerstation .

so between the central plateau and northland there’s plenty of scope for some activity at any time and it would really throw a spanner in the works if something went up . If it happened in Auckland it would make Covid look like an opti race with no breeze .

@Ex Machina That map is of the Auckland Volcanic Field, your totally correct there are volcanics elsewhere. However the South Auckland Field is much older and classed as extinct as is Whangarei. The Northland Volcanic Field is a little harder to class as there are events around 40,000 yrs ago .... probably on its way out.

Outside of the greater Rotorua-Taupo area (Taupo Volcanic Zone), we can only map molten rock under the Auckland area, at about 80 km depth.

Totally agree the next eruption in Auckland will not be a lot of fun.

2 bumped threads of mine so old Rangitoto was practically steaming.

Subsequently I moved from the shadow of Rangi, Hobson, Eden and One tree hill north to Waitangi/Kerikeri /Waimate.

Pretty well guaranteed to end up like one of those Pompeii plaster casts reaching out desperately for evermore for a rum and coke.
