Southernmost point — Jacquemart Island (off the south coast of Campbell Island) in the Campbell Island group

Westernmost point — Cape Lovitt, Auckland Islands

Easternmost point — Forty-Fours/Motuhara, East of the Chatham Islands

You forgot NZ territorial Antartica and a few more islands up where its warm

A true round NZ would be no stops at finish at the start (obviously)

 

Thus... no limits on how far east/west/north/south you go as long as you go around nz

 

And you should be allowed to go through the cook straight one way and back the other ( figure of 8 route or circular route) PR any way you like!

I don't think the Tonga Gov't would allow that and you would be breaking international law on the Sea.

Interesting but knot a lot to see just more sea.

 

By comparision, evaluation of alternatives to see what is more "popular" or "preferred" should be considered first.

 

Perhaps a poll is a good start.

 

One alternative would be a race around NZ visiting all major ports, with both a minimum (recovery period) and a maximum (sightseeing) time limits with a requirement that each crew member do a minimum of one major sightseeing event/location (from an approved list) before departure for the next port. Starting from their nominated "home" port a figure of "8" around either way.

e.g. from Auckland to Marsden Point to Mangonui to New Plymouth, Nelson, Picton, Lyttleton, Timaru, Port Chalmers, Bluff, Mitre Sound, Wellington, Napier, Gisborne, Tauranga, Whitianga to finish at Auckland.

I have tried to avoid all dangerous SEA / RIVER bars (Hokianga, Kaipara, Manukau, Greymouth, Hokitika but have left in all YACHT CLUB BARS. Extra points available for optional "refreshing pit stops" at say Tutukaka, Russell, Kerikeri, Houhora, Raglan, Wanganui, Mana / Plimmerton, Akaroa, Oamaru, Half Moon Bay, Riverton, Dusky Sound, Milford Sound, Jackson Bay/Haast, Petone, Coromandel, Thames etc and if suitable safe conditions, bar crossings by tender at Westport, Greymouth, Whakatane or similar where yachts can anchor off with 1 crew aboard and send other crew ashore & back safely.

 

Going through French Pass, Acheron Passage, Inside Resolution & Secretary Islands, around Stewart etc are all possibilities that would be interesting and challenging but equally motoring could be allowed on some stretches e.g. in the various sounds with little / no wind or constricted sailing searoom.

 

This would allow more time to actually see more, much more of New Zealand, enjoy the local tourist spots, whilst still doing plenty of sailing and racing around NZ.

 

It may well take the same time as the above big way out there race but it may well tick more boxes for some.

It's only a comparative idea for debate or comparison for marketing purposes.

 

Personally it's a long way from Kermadec to Auckland Is with not a lot of interesting things to do or see and each day only getting colder and windier . . . and colder still more than yesterday

 

It's a long way going south looking for ice for one's rum
