New Zealand public loosing interest

According to various reports from New Zealand, the public is losing its appetite for taxpayer funding of the next America’s Cup bid.

Prime Minister John Key told Newstalk ZB, “"My sense actually is the public is waning on the idea a bit. I think there's a few people saying 'we don't like the fact that this is a sport where the winner sets the rules'."

"This can't be a government-led thing," he said on the show, declaring that Team NZ needs to find private sector sponsors and donors to fund the campaign.

And on Kiwi website voxy.co.nz, the Executive Director of the New Zealand Taxpayers’ Union, Jordan Williams was quoted as saying taxpayers shouldn't be forced to cough up for Team New Zealand.

Why should the Gov't fund TNZ when IT IS a business and Private NZ sponsors and the NZ Marine Industry “won't put their money where their mouth is”.

Dalton has also expressed frustration over the handling of Friday's Auckland press conference, saying "portrayals he issued government with a funding ultimatum were not what was intended and it has only strained the political environment while the clock ticks."

"TNZ is facing a possible terminal financial situation - facing a deadline of just 14 days before their money runs out" according to a report by a well known Australian sailing website - sailing news magazine company."
