Lucky to have the Otago so close.

Whats happening with the canoeist of New Plymouth?

He must be going backwards right now!...

from RNZN

HMNZS OTAGO rescued three sailors from the 11-metre yacht DJANGO II in ferocious seas north of New Zealand last night. At one stage the ship's diver, LT Simon Wasley, leapt into the sea to re-attach a line to the yacht's liferaft so it could be pulled to OTAGO. OTAGO will return to Devonport Naval Base at 10am with the rescued sailors. We are getting photos of the rescue, meanwhile, this link is to a Radio NZ interview with the ship's CO, LT CDR Tim Garvan

HMNZS Otago was not exactly "in the area" she left Auckland yesterday morning! The AIS system lost contact with her leaving the Hauraki Gulf at about 11:30am....

Well done on the rescue to all concerned! Pleased everyone is safe.

Yes. the kayaker is losing ground every day during the current offshore weather pattern so he is just waiting it out. Sea anchor and snug cabin space.

Once it changes back to the forecasted westerly he'll start paddling again.

He's already been out there for 3 months so a few more days is nothing.

Why didn't they put a .50 cal round through it and sink it?

I'm not being facetious - just assuming the chances of salvage are so slim as to not outweigh the risk of someone hitting it.

Happy to be corrected.

I assume because there is hope they could salvage it?

There was a french couple that lost their boat off the north of NZ a few years ago. and the Navy at the time requested the skipper destroyed all the skin fittings to ensure the boat sank...

That was Carenza, (sp)

Just goes to show if you can pick a Navy to rescue you then the RNZN is among the best

Hope Djanjo survives but there will be massive loads on the hull with the rudder swinging off one bearing.

She is a sweet boat !

What is the ketch incident mentioned earlier. anything online about that ?

Charles had to go back aboard to sink Carenza himself at the request of Maritime NZ IIRC, (or if not MNZ, whatever NZ governmental body was in charge).

V sad when a good boat has that fate ...who knows she may stay together long enough to be salvaged - assume there was no sea anchor or rogue out ?

Meant drogue ! Predictive txt can be annoying at times :)

rogue fit well. there could be a rouge fisherman out there claiming salvage rights? :D

You are in your inflatable and being hauled towards the ship, but hang on, she is doing an extreme roll and you're worried about being caught under her. ( which understand was the case) What is the answer? How do you get in close to a rolling rescue ship safely?
