RPNYC Crewed Central Triangle:  6 March 2015

With only just under 5 weeks to go for the Central Triangle, we hope your preparations are going super well.  The upcoming Kapiti-Chetwode Race will be a good shake down and an opportunity for some good crew work, systems and safety checks.

We hear that Satellite Spy is back in the water, and will be sailing again in the next few days. She is looking fantastic, and faster than ever. But can her crew remember how to sail her?

Skippers will be emailed weekly (more or less) from here on by the Central Triangle Committee so expect more updates soon.  If you would like to receive the emails directly, please send your request to mail@centraltriangle.org.nz.

Sea Survival:

Please remember that 40% of the crew on each boat in the Central Triangle must have completed an Advanced Sea Survival course within the last five years. For a crew of 5, this means that two crew must have completed the course. For crews of six or seven, this means three crew must have completed the course. For crews of eight, nine or ten, four crew must have completed the course.

We are aware of at least three boats that don’t currently meet the 40% requirement.

We have asked Wellington Ocean Sports whether another course could be run before the race. This would be subject to minimum numbers. There are two possible course dates: 14/15 February, or more likely 28 February/1 March.

If you don't have 40% of your crew qualified, please contact Pedro on 021-476-514 or emailmail@centraltriangle.org.nz  to register your interest in a course urgently.

(Note that the requirement for the advanced sea survival course does not apply to boats competing only in the Akaroa Race).

Akaroa Hospitality Package:

We are pleased to confirm the mooring and hospitality arrangements for the AKaroa stopover. As promised, Akaroa Yacht Club have worked hard to package arrangements for mooring, hospitality and prizegiving while you're in Akaroa.

For just $60 per crew member, the Akaroa Yacht Club will provide:

•           A mooring

•           24/7 RIB transport to and from yachts

•           A light meal on arrival (regardless of when boats arrive), the bar will also be open

•           Two course dinner at the prizegiving on Sunday 8th night

•           Cooked breakfast at the briefing on Monday 9th

•           A packed lunch to take with you to Napier

•           A temporary light off Green Point (mainly for the benefit of The Guarantee…)

You can book and pay for the crew package online here.

We hope this eases your on water logistics and provisioning needs during your stopover. Akaroa need to confirm numbers for their caterers by Friday 20 February, so we would appreciate if people could book and pay online by then.

You should hear from us soon about arrangement for the Napier stopover, and for the departure and prize giving functions in Wellington.

If you have any questions, please email mail@centraltriangle.org.nz or call Pedro on 021-476-514.

Accommodation:

If you haven't made accommodation arrangements and wish to stay on shore, please remember to book this yourselves and do so urgently. We understand that accommodation in Akaroa is already very tight, while there is a World Cup cricket match in Napier a couple of days after we leave, and so there will be a lot of demand for accommodation there as well.

Regatta Book:

We are organising a book as a momento of the race as well. Please send a high quality photo of your boat, along with information about the boat and her crew to mail@centraltriangle.org.nz by 6 February 2015.

2015 Central Triangle Race 5th – 15th March 2015

Incorporating the 2015 RPNYC Akaroa Race

Welcome!

In four weeks’ time, many of you will be well on your way to Napier, some of you may even be there!  Just like you, we are in the final stages of our preparation. Draft sailing instructions are almost ready, you should see these in a few days’ time. Catering and hospitality plans are advancing. And we are well into finalising all of the paperwork required for the race.

Satellite Spy has sailed for the first time after her refit. The crew seem to have remembered most of the important things… though she’d probably go quicker with the brace out of the water.

Meanwhile, Blink has set the bar high with a race record in the Kapiti-Chetwode race.

The next opportunity for boats to have a crack at one another will be the Sovereign Port Nicholson Regatta. So far, nine of the twelve Central Triangle/Akaroa Race entrants have also entered the regatta, and will be competing for bragging rights ahead of the start on 6 March 2015.

In this edition… reminders from last time, notices to competitorsregistration forms, and provisions in Akaroa.

Skippers, please pass this email to all your participating crew. If they want to receive the emails directly, please have them email mail@centraltriangle.org.nz, or see the info below about crew registration for another way to sign up for the email.

Warm regards,
Paul, Pedro, Vesna
Central Triangle Organising Committee

Notices to competitors

We have published four notices to competitors:

·         NTC 01: Amendment to the Akaroa Race notice of race

Making it compulsory to carry an SSB radio or satellite phone (Akaroa race only).

·         NTC 02: Amendment to the Central Triangle Race notice of race

Making it compulsory to attend the farewell function and briefings (we can make exceptions if necessary).

·         NTC 03: Advanced sea survival equivalency

Stating that we consider STCW A-VI/1, table 1 to be equivalent to and advanced sea survival course, subject to certain conditions.

Follow the links above, or view these notices of the event website.

Reminders from last time

Wellington Ocean Sports is running the next advanced sea survival course on 28 February/1 March. If you plan to do the course, please register early to help with planning.

Boats that wish to apply for an exemption from the first aid requirement must do so by email tomail@centraltriangle.org.nz. Exemptions will be published in a notice to competitors in order to maintain transparency.

The Akaroa hospitality package has been very popular, with nearly half of the fleet already having signed up! You can book and pay for the crew package online here. Akaroa needs to confirm numbers for their caterers by Friday 20 February, so we would appreciate if people could book and pay online by then.

We are organising a book as a momento of the race as well. If you haven’t already done so, please send a high quality photo of your boat, along with information about the boat and her crew tomail@centraltriangle.org.nz as soon as possible.

Registration underway

Almost all boats have now registered online. Thanks for getting this done so early, it makes life a lot easier for us. The next job is to get your crews registered.

Crew can go to the website and create a new account, and will then be able to complete the crew registration form. Please email mail@centraltriangle.org.nz with any questions.

Skippers, you have had your registration details emailed to you already. Let us know if you need your details emailed to you again.

You will need a copy of your advanced sea survival and first aid certificates (if you have them).

These forms need to be completed as soon as possible please to allow our planning to continue.

Provisions in Akaroa

You’ve probably all thought about how to provision for the three legs of the race already. If you plan to eat croissants and cheese all the way to Napier, then you’ll find that Akaroa has everything you need. If you plan to go to the supermarket, then remember that Akaroa only has a Four Square. The Four Square is open Sun 8.00am – 6.30pm, and from 8am on Monday morning. The nearest large supermarket is the New World in Halswell, about an hour away.

It is getting pretty exciting now with only five days to go for the start of the Crewed Central Triangle.

Welcome function and briefing on Thursday at RPNYC with the start gun on Friday for what is looking like a nice ride to Akaroa.    Weather this far out is looking like gennakers or spinnakers might be deployed for a ride all the way to Banks Peninsula.  Pain chocolat or croissants in Akaroa on Saturday?

Final preparations are being made by Skippers and their Crew and it was a hive of activity in Wellington today in glorious sunshine.  Chris Coad of Chris Coad Photography is our official photographer for the start and finish of the race.  Chris will be out taking photos on the start line on Friday and photos and results will be collated for the Momento book to be presented to each skipper after the race.

Mark your calendars for the prize giving set for Sunday 15th of March.
