Murray Deaker on Team NZ: Grant Dalton must go

Recommended Posts

I'm afraid I agree with Deaker here.  The way this latest "announcement" was handled, the way Barker has been treated, the way the rest of the team must now feel, someone has to be the fall guy, and that guy should be Dalton.  Maybe Barker could take his role?

As sad as it is, I don't think there is now any place for either of them in the team - Barker by his own choice, and Dalton's should be by the boards choice.  One can only hope the board is looking in to what went down over the past few weeks, and when they find out what happened, release the details, and release the offender.

While it's not entirely a public organization (certainly not at the moment without any govt. funding), the fact they are a New Zealand team, and have a huge fan base in the country, should ensure they are transparent and open in their communications to the country.  If they're not, they will very quickly lose support.

The next few weeks are going to be very interesting...

If Dalton goes so does ETNZ! Did Deaker in all his wisdom have a replacement in mind for Dalton or was it just axe him and find someone else, those are some pretty big boots to fill. ETNZ is unique in the way we don't have open budgets like the other teams, if "Dalton must go" we may as well kiss it goodbye.

As for Barker he's an amazing sailor, a pro sailor..in a pro sport. If you don't perform another pro sailor will take your spot.......that's why it's called professional sport

Who is Murray Deaker? What does he sail on?

10 odd times Sports Journalist something or other of the year amongst many other accolades. M Class.... amongst others.

Is that enough or do you need more? ;)

If Dalton goes so does ETNZ!

That's what the said with Peter Blake... but they were wrong then as well. Both are unusual but not certainly unique. TNZ as a brand is way bigger than any one person. There are people/groups out there right this minute making plans for TNZ if GD bails...... or gets shown the door. There would be millionaires/billionaires everywhere willing to pay large to have TNZ. An Swiss/Italian drug pusher did exactly that. Sure he didn't get to use the TNZ name but that's about all he didn't get.

If Dalton called the lay day in Frisco he should be long gone on this alone. Barker should have had the power to do this but apparently found out by email.

From all we have been told Daltons the one who has damaged the ETNZ brand and should be gone on this also. Barker seems to have been treated very unprofessionally in this latest debarcle. I would like him to stay on but I want Dalton gone.

I agree with PJ though that Oracle have ensured they will be the only AC winners in town.

One thing that pisses me off the most is that ETNZ and our taxes are being linked in a confidential agreement where not one of us will get any disclosure to the actual sum involved.

Time for this pack of serial trough scoffing inept philandering twits to pack it up and leave the public purse in peace.

There was a pretty thorough financial break down done by ETNZ after the last cup. It's available online for anyone with 10 mins to search for it.

Like it's been said above, Dalton walking right now would likely spell the end of TNZ. If that's what you'd like so see, then jump on the Deaker band wagon and call for blood. It's all very well lynching Dalton, but I'm yet to hear any mention of a $100m plan B. Cause that's what we'll be up against. Just ask the French/Australians/Koreans etc.

I not interested in waiting for another post cup audit to belatedly reveal the amount taxpayers loot that has been squandered.

Time to reveal all now including the bloated salaries being paid to certain individuals high in the ETNZ hierarchy.

The poisoned chalice has spilt its toxic contents over Deano, who will be next.

Cause that's what we'll be up against.

That's a key word in a lot of this palava going on.

Some see 'their' team and naturally want to support/shelter/cuddle etc, so will turn a blind eye to some of the issues. That's standard human nature in action.

Others see a business, and like when most business's have deep performance issues and/or are in the sh*t something has to change, usually that's the person/s calling the shots.

It's all making for rather interesting goings that's for sure.

Deaker is consistent with my reaction to the matter, though I readily acknowledge all I know about this is what we are reading. A few uninformed musings though:

- I don't buy off on the view that Dalton is necessary for the fundraising. Might he instead be a liability to the fundraising at this juncture?

- I wonder what his contract says? Could TNZ be stuck with a contract that financially handcuffs them to Dalton at this point - too expensive to break?

- If NZ public opinion is important to their success and brand name (and I sense it is), it seems to me that this might now push them to become a much more transparent organization. I think this would ultimately make them stronger.

Sure is going to be interesting. I hope they put all this dis functionality behind them and become a team again. I can't see Ashley having signed up for another round if the team was a train wreck. Hopefully amongst the 50 full time staff there's a PR position being filled though.

Also Interesting that Brad Butterworth has been so quiet. I would have thought this would be the prime opportunity to step up and fill Daltons shoes?

And then there's this inconvenient spanner in the works: http://www.nzherald.co.nz/sport/news/article.cfm?c_id=4&objectid=11409765

Unsure about his 'clarity and courage' comment, but the money talks at the end of the day.

Having a quick suss of the 250 odd comments attached to that Deaker article it seems about 85% agree with him and would prefer GD gone, 5% want Dean gone and about 5% want Deaker gone.

I like this write up from today's Scuttlebutt, only because it agrees with me.

Quieting the critics
Team New Zealand leader Grant Dalton is the man who goes into the board rooms and gets the sponsors for the team. The Kiwi America's Cup team would not exist without sponsors. Whether or not this is a popular decision is not relevant, and even Mr. Coutts said that this was a difficult task, and Dalton is better at it than anyone else.

Dean Barker is a great guy and a fine sailor, but the decision to hire Peter Burling was made a long time ago, and was never a secret. However, the fact that the Cup was lost cannot be blamed on any member of the team, but was a matter of money.

Oracle owner Larry Ellison was not going to lose the Cup; no matter what it cost and he is the fifth wealthiest man in the world. Ellison spent over $250 million to win the race and their computerized foiling system was well beyond the Kiwi's capability (and arguably illegal too).

The public should also know that ETNZ brought in enough business into New Zealand. The $36 million taxpayer investment was deemed to show a positive impact of $87 million to the New Zealand economy. Wouldn't everyone be glad to get that kind of return on their investment?

The Cup was not lost due to any mistakes made by Dalton or Barker. The fastest boat wins and a computer aided system will beat manpower every day of the week. Oracle only came back to win the Cup, after their team mastered the use of that computer.

These are the facts. All the complainers are entitled to their own opinions, but not their own facts.

Where exactly is the positive proof that the impact of $87 million actually existed.

There is spin and there is smoke and mirrors.

The fruit from the tree of the poisoned chalice does not fall that far nor wide.

Its a yawn fest that should not be knee deep in the public purse.

Check out the report that was linked to in one of these threads... It was a pretty good summary of where the money went, and how it was recovered... This has been covered umpteen times now... Enough with the negative, lets move on to the next one, and hope that Dalton, Burling, Ashby et al... can pull together another competitive challenge... I'll be going again, the last one was awesome!
