Island Time 1,235
On again this year, Wednesday 23rd Dec. Details here http://crew.org.nz/rum_race.html Theme will be announced in the next few days. I'm looking for companies that would like to donate prizes again. For anyone interested this is one of, if not the biggest single race event on the Auckland Calendar, with about 60 odd boats last year, and filling the RYC to capacity for the party... Put it in your diaries everyone!
DrWatson 375
Damn! Not landing until 26 Dec...
Deep Purple 511
We'll be there this year Handicapped to oblivion as usual I suppose
Black Panther 1,584
All complaints about handicapping are to be directed to Markm and accompanied by a bottle of Mt Gay. Pretty sure that's in the rules somewhere.
Deep Purple 511
I'd rather come last and drink the rum myself
Black Panther 1,584
A perfectly reasonable response.
markm 30
It can be arranged, we always try to meet competitor expectations.
Adrianp 120
We'll be there this year Handicapped to oblivion as usual I suppose To be fair, we did do 26.4kts in the last rum race I did with you!
Island Time 1,235
Made a facebook event - never done that before, interested in comments; https://www.facebook.com/events/995862840478644/ Matt
Vorpal Blade 89
All going according to plan we might even be able unleash the VB for its first ever race, could be a fun "client entertainment" evening.
Island Time 1,235
That's the sort of thing it's for. No points, casual, ideal for workmates/beginners intro...
Dambo 44
Any thoughts of a theme yet? The kids want to plan ahead this year, and this year it's their boat that'll be entered (assuming all the sanding and painting is done by then)
Island Time 1,235
Yep, the theme this year is "Back to the Islands" so should be pretty easy
Dambo 44
Yep, the theme this year is "Back to the Islands" so should be pretty easy Hmm, found the bag of dressups off the yacht from a couple of years ago - grass skirts and g-strings... again...?! That was a bit breezy! May be not on the kids little boat.
madyottie 82
Unlike Dambo I'm planning to leave the little boat behind this time, although getting pressure from family to sail that and not the GBE. Matt can I enter both boats for the handicapper and nomimate which one closer to the time?
Island Time 1,235
Sure, don't see why not.
madyottie 82
So I now have a dilemma. First boat to start, or one of the last. Very slow wet boat, or fastish wetter boat. Think I need the Double Rainbow guy, "what does it mean? " Passing people is lots of fun, but so is watching all the fast boat charging past on the long course. Ooh what to do, what to do! Deep Purple 511
I theory you shouldn't pass anyone until the finish line
madyottie 82
Hmm you're probably right. Just how does one handicap a bog standard gbe with no race history and old pinhead mainsail? How about starting ten minutes before the slowest other gbe? Twenty? I'm thinking we'll probably start alongside Plan B and Sublime? Seems pretty fair considering we're all on a big learning curve and won't have kites on this occasion. Although I wouldn't object to a small head start. Now, how do I convince them both to join in? Vorpal Blade 89
Now, how do I convince them both to join in? That bits the easy part, wager rum in copious volumes and they will come.
