gurge 0
Live south of Bombays and have been away from Auckland yacht clubs for 20 plus years. Looking to do some harbour racing and cruising. Boat initially going to be in Westhaven. Looking to join a club so interested in what the clubs are now like or has nothing changed. Seems to be a lot of collaboration between them all now so does it matter which one gets the nod. Cheers

B00B00 306
Hi Gurge, if you are weathaven based then it would have to be one of the westhaven clubs. Both the RNZYS and the Richmond yacht club run some really good racing. The RNZYS covers the bigger boats 35-52ft really well and a huge diverse racing calender, they also have a lot of family and crusing events. Richmond does a huge amount of racing as well with big fleets, mostly the slightly smaller boats 30-45ft and also a good social events calender. The best harbour racing is the winter series as everyone strips the cruising gear off the boats and races hard. It's usually fortnightly. There is also a great 2 handed series run by the shorthanded sailing association (SSANZ) which always has over 130 boats and caters for all boats and skill levels. Sanzz also run the round north island race every 3 years (next one Feb next year) and a longer 150-250 nm race each year. Summer evening harbour racing is Wednesday nights that alternate weekly between the RNZYS and Richmond. There is a few longer weekend races such as the commodores cup, gold cup, spring regatta and then the bigger ones like the tauranga race and coastal classic. There is a huge amount of friday night non Spinnaker rum racing through the summer and a bit right through winter. Ponsonby runs a Thursday afternoon one, RNZYS runs a Friday afternoon one and Richmond have a later Friday night one. It's always good to get friends and family out for a rum race. Royal Akarana yacht club do the best offshore races but not so many weeknight keel boat races. For the regattas you only have Auckland regatta and bay of island race week. Both great fun to do. Bay week really is a great tour.
