Does anyone know where I might get a 40mm blade for a block plane?

As far as I'm concerned a block plane is an essential boat building tool and there is no power tool equivalent. I have tried all the usual outlets and the general opinion is that I will have to spend $200 on a new plane instead of $20 on a new blade.

A bit miffed about that!

It's a low-attack Irwin.

Any solid (without slot) 40 mm blade will fit.

Can't believe just how expensive Irwin's have got either!

Had mine for 52 years.

Forget the Irwin. New that is. It is not the same as the 52yr old one. Look on trademe under Block Plane""and you will see some blades for sale cheap. But if you want a real nice replacement block, you will also see listed the "Faithful" made in the UK.

Faithful planes are made in India for a UK company. They are of similar quality to the current Stanleys, and probably better value for money, but you get what you pay for with the blade.
