Duck board build

Recommended Posts

I'm going to give it a go. Hope it's not too much of a major, so asking for advice. Has any one made one? SF is a bit of an older boat, GOP, and I'm thinking a duck board off the stern would be an improvement. Was thinking initially of teak.... yeah, right, until I looked at the cost. So, is there any other materials, ie glass over say 20mm marine ply, or something else I can look at. Solid or cross hatche'd?. I have a transom hung rudder, so a cut out for the swing of that is required.

Pleased to have any feedback.

You could consider quila? It will weather and look pretty similar to teak. Heavy, but simple enough to build.

Otherwise glass over foam isn't difficult, just have to lay it up strong enough.

Hi San Fran, sorry I dont have many photos with me right now(on anchor in the Tobago Cays caribbean after crossing the atlantic) but I do have a few.

I made mine out of 25mm foam with 2 layers of 400gm double bias glass on both sides and stiffened with carbon around the edges. I also made a support for the bottom the same way. I had to grind the hull down to the bare glass so i could carbon and glass it on there which was 2 x 150mm layers of about 400gm carbon and 1 x the same in normal glass. It was pretty strong, strong enough for me to stand on the end with no movement at all.

We decided at the same time to cut the transom open as we already had so much refairing work to do on the transom. It came out really well. The hardest part was the fairing and painting.

We did the transom and boarding platform on big red a few years back. Extended the cockpit floor among other things. Used the cockpit floor as the top layer and the two more layers underneath. All 12 mm ply covered in a nice heavy layer of DB. Still looks mint today.
