mcp 34
What is the general consensus on Dockline rope type and length? A recommended product and outlet would be great to know also.
Bradz 18
We have always gone for 3 strand nylon, spliced to suit the berth. Thickness obviously to suit vessel.
Island Time 1,284
Yep, agreed. Nylon is nice and stretchy, as well as strong. Go see Grant (Knot Me on here) at chains ropes and anchors. Some of the new fibres are also good, and he's the expert.
Tillsbury 5
I like 8-strand nylon, easy and neat to splice and less twist.
Island Time 1,284
8 strand is better. But more expensive and harder to splice. It's better because it is less susceptible to cyclic loading failure. But that is rarely an issue in dock lines, as they are normally well oversized strength wise. IMO. mcp 34
Cheers guys. So 3 or 8 strand nylon is the go. IT, you mentioned sizing, which haven't considered yet...are there any general guidelines there?
wheels 543
Call Chains Ropes and Anchors (Knot Me here on crew) They are the importers/suppliers of most of the rope that comes into NZ . They can give you all the info you need on sizing etc. They can even go to the Marina and make the lines to suit right there in the spot. That way they are perfect. Or you can measure yourself and get them to make to length you specify
Fogg 427
Agree that KM (Grant) is your man here.
mcp 34
Thanks guys. I have my new docklines via CRA. Sharp pricing compared to other companies as well.
