wrt to recreational boaties we have these two which look like they came in when the constitution was redrafted 2012 - "To represent and promote the interests of its Members; TO advocate for free access to coastal and inland waters for yachting and boating;" 

Re-reading Dave A's comment on the 22nd, I think that I was wrong to include YNZ not lobbying, they at least tried to get our case across in some form.
 

 

Actually, I’d suggest the changes on the website and YNZ’s constitution were brought about by complaints from clubs rather than YNZ changing their ways. 
 

The club here has had various discussions with YNZ over charging non racing members (maybe 5/6ths of membership) a fee for over 20 years now. It was brought to their attention, I think at a YNZ agm, that the people they claim to represent - launches and cruisers, were not mentioned in YNZ’s constitution at all, any where, even once. 

Changing their website is fine, have they actually changed their behaviour? Examples?

I can’t see anywhere in DA’s speil where he has advocated to anyone on behalf of cruising boats. I only read ‘sport’ and racing related advocacy, mostly regarding dinghies. Not that I think we should necessarily be boating in level 3. I just think our national body should have a position on it. Maybe do what other governing bodies are and come up with procedures that would make boating safer at level 1 & 2 and provide those to Sport NZ, in the hope that gets boating the green light a soon as practical. I also think if they claim to advocate for a group of people, and charge them an annual fee to do so, then they should do it.
 

This is likely the absolute best opportunity they will have this decade to advocate on behalf of a somewhat disgruntled group of their membership, and prove they are at least trying to do something on their behalf to proved a path or some certainty to that part of boating, but they haven’t really lifted a finger. Have they?

I have done just this the last two years , refuse to pay YNZ fee through five yacht clubs and nominated one. This of course creates a great deal of hassle for  the smaller clubs and I doubt that they have pursued it just pretended that I paid . However it is a point of principle and as I age more I note that the most fun regattas and events are organised outside YNZ !

From what I see it is a very money focused operation. Fast to spend it on Olympics, equally as fast to plead poverty when it's something local, but then YNZ is there for high performance, not everyone.

YNZ's constituents are the Clubs. Yachties themselves have no real national body.

it just sums up their arrogance. The worst thing is they are competing with their own members, notwithstanding the fact that Akarana had their (recently completed) expansion on the books for years, they have still tried to push through their own facility at Takapuna

I wonder how it would go over if offshore power boating NZ tried to charge launch owners a fee ? 
 

To train  kids in mini powerboat racing and run their organisation ? 
 

imagine if yacht owners had to pay too !

What say the members of this forum construct either a petition or a survey to encourage YNZ to fulfill their natural role.  The role that they have positioned themselves to be (and have never been) is a body that represents, and advocates for, all "boaters".  This would include obviously their current "performance sailing", but expand to encompass cruising, fishing(?), marina berth holders, and ....(????).  They should also have a voice to represent us regarding the environment (I'm thinking antifouling), marine farms and ????

I'd be happy to contribute a bit of time.  If we knocked something together and polished it up, we could then distribute it via our yacht clubs, contacts etc etc.

This has always been a ridiculous situation where YNZ source their funding primarily from those who do not benefit from their activities.

To clarify that, the aim would be to encourage YNZ to do more than pay lipservice.  When was the last time that YNZ asked you, as a member, what your views are on certain issues?

Which was the main thrust of my comments up thread 

I benefit greatly from their PHRF system and boat registration which allows me to race in major events . I’m happy to pay the annual fees for handicapping and have nothing but praise for the lovely people that work in that dept .

My club is a “ cruising club” which is struggling to retain its membership and would benefit from having more launch owners . Correct me if I’m wrong but I think the only benefit to launch owners paying their YNZ fee is getting a card that allows you to wander into another affiliated club ?

My main beef with YNZ is where the fees we pay get spent. And Govt.grants depend on performance mean a  whopping salary bill to pay  mainly for elite sailing as I noted earlier. Putting up fees is easy but cutting costs is an anathema to most bureaucracies and this one is no different.

Only if it is your primary residence and you have elected to stay there from 11:59pm on 30 March 2020.

Can I carry out essential maintenance on my boat?

Yes, but if the boat is in a marina please check with the marina manager for conditions that may apply.

 

Fishing etc is still allowed.

Was thinking about this overnight and actually S****NZ probably don't have any jurisdiction over what happens on the water.  In Auckland its the Harbourmaster.  No notice to mariners on their website as far as I can see. Fill ya boots!

Being that it’s a race boat, be hard to live on away from shore for as long as he did IMO.

In all the interactions I have had with the Police in the last 5 weeks, I have been impressed with their professionalism and communication skills.  We are fortunate to be here.

Watching, listening and reading the media's output, not so much.

My headline was tongue in cheek, FYI 8>)
