Fiji Race 2010

Quarter Pint

Recommended Posts

A band of tropical cloud lies to the west of Fiji over Vanuatu. High cloud associated with is streaming over Fiji causing hazy skies and a few light showers, mostly about the east where onshore winds are helping to keep moisture high in the lower levels of the atmosphere. On the satellite image three separate cloud areas can be seen, and each of these will spawn a separate low pressure centre in the next 24-36 hours.

The forecast weather pattern for Saturday evening (see image Sat_evening) indicates the location of the three separate low pressure systems. By Sunday evening each of these lows is still a separate entity moving south of Fiji, and then Monday the southernmost low takes over and becomes a very deep system near the north island of NZ.

Winds turning northeast today then northerly tomorrow and becoming more humid and cloudy. Rain will be light and patchy today but more widespread and persistent tomorrow with some thunder in the afternoons about the larger islands. The main band of cloud will cross Fiji Sunday night and Monday morning bringing some heavy falls with possible flash flooding.

So did Lion NZ run out of diesel?

And did Wired return to the marina as well?

Heard they ripped a genacker at the start, surely they didn't go get another one??

Watched the start with the apprentice race officers, my sons 5 & 3, and their manager my wife. All had a conservative start including Lion NZ which went back to the dock with some problems, but they were last seen leaving Orakei bouy with the big spinnaker up and looking good.

The general had the best start but i thought that o"sinnermans satr was the best conservative and looked good in the time before we went back to the dock, and then the bar.

Does anybody know how often the trackers update?

E.g. every 10 minutes or so?

(Also: it is pretty obvious they do not update at the same time)

A leisurely start by all, with OSinnerman first over the line. A light southerly breeze of 10 - 12 knots, most boats starting with genneker, and few with kite. Skiddy Too was late at the start, was soon heading up the channel in attack mode, about 15 minutes behind the rest of the fleet. Revs as expected was leading the 40 footers, with Pretty Boy Floyd just behind, and Bullrush lurking somewhere in background. General Lee was running a few angles with their genny, and crossed between Rangitoto and the shore a number of times before settling down and preparing to run down the 40 footers.

I have photos to follow.

Paddy the trackers go off every 15 mins...

Anyone know what's happening to Farrago II. Are they still at Opua or is their tracker turned off? Mike and the boys seem to have settled and have made good northing.

Can someone post a screenshot of the tracker....stupid iPhones can't view flash. Looked like a great day for a start but I wonder if anyone chooses to hunker down in the far north when the nor Easter blows up then hook into the nor west flow following it. Will post start pics on Monday.
