510NM OF ADVENTURE

The Short Handed Sailing Association of New Zealand (SSANZ) has a long and successful history of running some of the most exciting yacht racing in New Zealand, including the Lewmar Triple Series, Chains Ropes & Anchors Enduro, Evolution Sails Round North Island and the Round New Zealand Race.

In true SSANZ fashion we continue to add to our stable of legendary events with a new and exciting event for 2022 – the Evolution Sails Northern Triangle, a 510nm journey taking in Auckland, Mangonui and Tauranga in late February next year.

Our races are some of the most widely followed in New Zealand. With our social media presence, trackers and EPIC race videos, a stellar community of people who want to race hard, help each other out and of course socialise, we are sure that this new event will be a sell out.
THE RACE
Starting on Saturday 19th February at 9am from Westhaven, the race is a total of 510nm.
  • Leg One: Auckland Harbour to the entrance of Mangonui Harbour  (approximately 154nm)
  • Leg Two: Entrance of Mangonui Harbour to Tauranga Harbour  (approximately 230nm)
  • Leg Three: Tauranga Harbour to Auckland Harbour  (approximately 126nm)

At Mangonui, a 24-hour minimum stopover once a minimum of 60% of monohulls have completed the leg will be required. At Tauranga, a 36-hour stopover after a minimum of 60% of monohulls have completed the leg will be required. The Race Officer will set start times for each new leg as appropriate after this time to allow for local harbour requirements, shipping movements and the safe start of each leg.

At Mangonui we will be hosted by the Mangonui Cruising Club, and in Tauranga we will be hosted by the Mount Yacht Club. A big thanks to both of these clubs for supporting this event.

Successful completion of this race will meet the passage qualification requirements for the yacht and two participating skippers for the Evolution Sails Round North Island 2023. This in no way guarantees an entry to the 2023 RNI.  Entrants of the 2023 RNI will also have to meet all other qualification requirements.
ENTRY
Entry Requirements
  • Boats must be either a Monohull yacht bigger than 7.923m or a multihull yacht 10.0m or bigger, and must hold a current Category 3 Safety Certificate for the duration of the race, and meet all entry requirements as detailed in the Notice of Race.
  • Entry opens at 7pm, Sunday 16th May for SSANZ members, for non SSANZ entrants entry will open at 7pm on Tuesday 18th May.
  • Entry is strictly limited to 40 boats, after this a wait list system will apply if required.
  • Entry is $900 for SSANZ Members and $1000 for non SSANZ entrants. Entry fees are non-refundable (joining SSANZ costs just $75 per year).
  • Entry is not transferrable to another boat/skipper. Skippers can transfer entry from one yacht to another – e.g to accommodate the sale and purchase of a new yacht prior to the start of the race – with the same skipper racing with the approval of SSANZ. No other transfers are possible.
  • In the event that an entrant can no longer participate – the entry spot will then be offered to the next skipper/yacht on the wait list.

Entry includes:
-    Race entry fee.
-    A set of two race t-shirts and two caps valued at over $100.
-    Two tickets to the Evolution Sails Northern Triangle prize giving to be held in Auckland in March 2022
-    Additional tickets for the Prize Giving will be available for purchase in late 2021 at a cost of $75 each.
THIS RACE WILL SELL OUT......
Wait List Process
  • When/if all 40 spots have been taken a wait list system will apply to additional entries.
  • Wait-listed boats will be offered spots as/if they become available in the order they join the waitlist.
  • To be added to the waitlist a fee of $150 must be paid.
  • In the event that a wait-listed boat is offered a spot – they will have 48 hours to accept and pay the remaining entry fee. If they decline when offered a spot – the waitlist fee will be forfeited.
  • A yacht can withdraw from the waitlist any time before they are offered a spot and receive a full refund of the $150 waitlist fee.
  • Any wait-listed boat not offered a race spot by 1 December 2021 – will be refunded the wait list fee in full in December. It is not expected that after 1 December any new boats will enter the fleet due to the preparation and build up time needed for this race.
THINGS TO NOTE....
Other information
  • Both skippers will be required to attend race briefing on Friday 18th February at the RNZYS at 18:00
  • Entrants are required to complete and supply a number of documents as part of our Safety, Media and Race Management requirements, failure to do this by the nominated date may result in your race entry being canceled and your entry being offered to the next yacht/skipper on the waitlist.
  • Entrants are required to meet certain other standards and requirements as detailed in the NOR, including YNZ category 3 safety requirements
  • Yachts will be required to anchor in both Mangonui and Tauranga- sufficient ground tackle, above that of category requirements should be carried by each yacht to ensure this can be safely undertaken in a blow. In Tauranga - berth arrangments have been made that will cater for most of the expected fleet, but all boats should be prepared and able to anchor safely in both harbours.
  • Additional information relating to this race can be found in the Notice of Race.  We strongly encourage all skippers to carefully read this document and understand all racing requirements prior to entering this race.
  • The Notice of Race will be available on the SSANZ website from 1 May 2021.

It should be noted that the Evolution Sails Northern Triangle Notice of Race is the guiding document for this race and any discrepancies between this information and the Notice of Race – the Notice of Race will be deemed to be the correct information. The Notice of Race will be available from the SSANZ website from 1 May 2021.

So much interest in this race just getting entered looks like being a tight race. I Keep checking the SSANZ site and watching the count down. How fast did the last 2NI sell out?
