Some ugly weather on its way

Recommended Posts

speaking of cruising there are about 7-8 boats on their way to Fiji, all left last Tuesday. Fleet includes Fusio, Caro Vita, Sula II and Australian cat Indigo II. They are just about level with the bottom of Ne wCal but feeling this weather , eg

as Fusio posted does not matter too much whether they spend their quarantine time at sea or on the hook

As long as nothing changes while they are at sea.

That's what I'm thinking.  With the current outbreak it's not inconceivable the door will be closed again.

Also I think there are restrictions on travel between islands within Fiji.

All in all we decided next year is a better option.

I know of a yacht currently just going past the kermedec islands on it's way to NZ. Passing right through the middle of that frontal system. Dont think it's going to be a very nice few days for them. Potentially extremely nasty even.

Is it that Youtube cat coming from Tonga? That's not a place I would want to be right now. I would be heading WNW at slow speed for a couple of days until this system passes thru, then come back on course - mid week should see better conditions. Looks too much like the conditions in which we saw Essence lost

FWFS,  all the best to  Pete, Megan & family on  Sula 2.

And to all the other adventurers that the call was stronger than caution in these uncertain times.

My apologies. I was refering to elevation of vessel in previous post.

It's going to be a fascinating time to be cruising Fiji. 83 more cases yesterday, 600 total. 4,700 fully vaccinated. Govt is resisting calls for a lockdown, I think mainly because no one listens to them anyway. 100 attended a funeral where the current limit is 10...

It may be one thing getting entry in, but how do you cruise all the different islands and control the risk you are introducing the virus to the outer islands? Getting fresh produce / supplies, having drinks with other cruisers etc?

These boats are going to have a substantial duty of care not to be the vector to currently isolated communities.

Arriving and Departing Fiji

Update:

14th May 2021 – Fiji is currently experiencing our second wave of COVID cases in the community and therefore there has been changes made in protocols for the Blue Lanes Initiative. A full copy of the changes can be found here. We continue to receive vessels under the Blue Lanes as our maritime borders remain open. Please engage with an agent to start your application process.

The Fijian Prime Minister announced the opening of borders to tourist and yachts under strict conditions in June 2021. Yachts must apply and be approved before embarking toward Fiji, approval is not automatic and each application will be specifically assessed. Applications MUST BE THROUGH AN AGENT.

A BULA WELCOME AWAITS YOU!!

My understanding is they won't be allowed to leave the big island.  My hope is none of them are stupid enough to try and circumvent whatever rules the fijians have in place.

Classic, so you can cruise Fiji, but you aren't allowed off your boat, including at uninhabited islands (accept at your port of entry).

I can see some issues with implementing that. No walks on the beach. No buying food?

I wonder if snorkelling is permitted? maybe if you don't land on the beach?

if you read this as well, https://www.denaraumarina.com/covid-19/ it would appear a boat clearing into Denerau is restricted to Viti Levu, and maybe you cannot even go shopping in Lautoka. Agree with various comments that Fiji is not the place to be this year, in particular out of respect for the locals who if the virus gets away on them are going to have their hands full.

This is the cat I was asking Boo Boo about, looks like they have just pulled out of Minerva heading south.

The boat has alot of issues, they want a very settled passage south..

I can not understand New Zealand based cruising yachts heading to Fiji this winter, there has been very little testing done up there -and as they test more people the infection rate rises in parallel. In fact this morning they announced the testers all have Covid positive results!

I know a number have gone from here in the last few weeks , even people with medical backgrounds-but why ?

Get a diesel heater and enjoy the NZ coastline in safety.

Diesel heaters all sold out at the moment... Think there are a few Eberspachers, but they are $$$. Or you can brave a Chinese one for $300.

But agree with the sentiments. Travelling in this new world will be frought with restrictions and disruptions, i.e. not being able to leave the island of your port of entry. But more to the point, these people are sailing into a big outbreak. If my perception is correct (and based on Fiji govt statements) compliance is very low, and the ability to test, track and trace is marginal.

These cruisers have a duty of care not to spread it to the isolated islands, and may risk catching it themselves.

Been watching their vids for a year or two, they're quite funny at times.
