Watch: Lucky escape at the Tweed Bar

Thursday, 27 May 2021

Tuesday 25th, May: Kyle Webb, American skipper of the Begonia, a 12m catamaran, times his exit of the Tweed River to coincide with the morning high tide.

Though he chose the right tide, Captain Kyle underestimated the size of the easterly swell hitting the bar. Despite the oversight, the Begonia almost made it to clear water.

Unfortunately, a wave capped and hit the cat's starboard side dragging it back into the impact zone, the following nine minutes a mix of terror for the people aboard, and good fortune too, as the Begonia, despite losing power and steering, somehow managed to avoid the Tweed breakwalls and get washed safely back down the river.

The Captains of that boat appear to have been previously well seasoned:

Lots of cruising since 2008, did loose one previous Cat that Jack-Line insurance made a 100% cover on when winds reversed on them at anchor and waves developed when anchored in 2.5 meter depth in Itally, boat washed ashore and was deemed a total loss. They have done more  long distance sailing than we have and their experience covers a wide range of territory. They had the experience to have know to avoide this so the back story to why they left harbor would be of enormous interest to me.

Did not pick up before that it was Begonia. Met them in Vanuatu in 2019, very nice couple. Have done alot of miles on that cat including NZ directly to Chile and return via French Polynesia.

Their Cat is a FP Mahe 36 with small engines, certainly not for bar bashing on a day like that, that's what Shark Cats were built for
