The 'blunt' Mark Dunphy, and his attempt to keep the America's Cup in New Zealand

Farmer now represents Greymouth Petroleum, and is also well entrenched in the battle to keep the America’s Cup in New Zealand.

Their tie-up is something he sees a few ironies in now given that old court case, but Farmer also sees some parallels between then and now, at least when it comes to Dunphy’s involvement.

”He is prepared to stand up against large foreign interests if he thinks that New Zealand is being shafted.”

If Jim Farmer is now working with Dunphy, then it may not be so bad?

Well safe to say things arent going swimmingly for Mr Dalton with this delay because no one has agreed to buy the hosting rights, and a growing groundswell of Kiwis questioning the need to take it away, plus of course two major players -America and Italy backing Auckland despite the geographic distance. I wonder how the conversation with his new best bud Ratcliffe is going now -Cowes anyone?

Team NZ's Grant Dalton wants to know who is behind home defence plan

Team New Zealand head Grant Dalton has demanded to know which overseas interests might be connected with a private sector bid to keep the next America’s Cup defence in Auckland.

Dalton has written to businessman Mark Dunphy who is fronting the campaign, specifically asking about contact with former billionaire team owners Larry Ellison, Ernesto Bertarelli and Patrizio Bertelli.

“Can you clarify your intentions, and the nature of any conversation, regarding the approaches made to solicit the support of the New York Yacht Club and who those approaches may have been through,” added Dalton.

Dalton said clear answers about who the Kiwi Home Defence campaign was connected to, were needed before anything further happens.

New poll favours Team NZ defending America's Cup offshore

A new poll shows New Zealanders don’t want the America’s Cup defended at home at an increased cost to the tax payer.

The poll, commissioned by Team New Zealand to gauge public sentiments as the hosting process intensifies, showed there was just 26 per cent of respondents in favour of the champion syndicate defending the America’s Cup in New Zealand “with significant increase in public/tax payer investment”.

Is this just spin from ETNZ?  Surely Kiwis want to cup to take place here?

Yes but not at any cost. People are realising the last few weeks extra economic damage will cost taxpayers enough without unnecessary additions like a boat race.

More interesting to me is the fact that TNZ even did the poll. As if they care what NZ public sentiment really says.

Was the question framed to secure a "No" answer seeing as TNZ really want an excuse to go offshore?

Yes I think so but this recent new effort to keep it onshore probably confused TNZ’s read of the NZ public mood - hence they probably felt the need to check ‘just in case’.

But I don’t think the poll result would influence their decision in any way - it would only influence their PR spin on explaining their decision.

LOL 100 mil at the moment is around a days income for the rich fullas that own these teams.

Obviously I just made that up but there's no shortage of money floating around if some 1%'er wants to hang the cup in his lounge.

Taxpayers don't need to be paying to host what at the end of the day, is a minority sporting event.

Squeezed into a corner the caged rat bites out, so Grant where is your funding to come from?

Pay for everybody to read Jim Farmers summary as he is someone who has been deeply involved, puts his money into Kiwi yachting and is not on the take from anyone.
