Kiwi Home Defence doubles proposal to Team New Zealand in bid to keep defence in Auckland

The Kiwi Home Defence campaign has doubled its financial proposal to keep the next America's Cup in New Zealand.

In a media statement, the Kiwi Home Defence confirmed it has sent a proposal to the Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron and the trustees of the Team New Zealand Trust to increase its firm commitment to help fund a home defence in Auckland from $20 million to $40 million.

The campaign, led by Kiwi rich-lister Mark Dunphy, believes that the additional commitment will be sufficient funding to stage a fully-funded and competitive defence of the America's Cup in Auckland.

Love the AM when the sailing is on . The crap that has being going on this year is a new low though . Most Professional sport has lost relevance lately with the loss of freedoms , income , business etc . Not many people will take any notice of squillionaires and millionaires try to fund boat races and calling each other names

Likely one of the reasons the NYYC has pulled out, it is beneath them to be involved in the current sideshow of trying to flog it round the world for the highest dollar, and till recently one would have thought beneath the squaddie too.

Where are the drunken "Loyal" people this time???

The Squadron has just published a list of FAQs regarding the America's Cup:

https://www.rnzys.org.nz/ac37-faq/

Q: Why can’t we just change boats and scale down the event to cut costs?

A: This would need to be agreed with the Challenger of Record and covered in the Protocol.  There is no appetite for such an agreement to be made and ETNZ is working on an AC37 defence in the AC75 given the success and worldwide acclaim given to the AC75 racing in the 36th America’s Cup in Auckland.

Former Team NZ director warns he will sue if Saudi Arabia named as next America's Cup host

A former Team New Zealand director has told the syndicate he will try to use a legal precedent that stopped the All Blacks touring apartheid South Africa in 1985 if Saudi Arabia is named as the venue of the next America's Cup.

This has sparked a legal warning from a high-profile member of the Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron (RNZYS).
Jim Farmer, QC, who was a director of Team New Zealand from 2003 to 2013 has written to both the RNZYS general committee members and Team New Zealand's directors, seeking a direct assurance that neither would seek to hold the next defence of the cup in Saudi Arabia.

[...]

In his letter to RNZYS commodore, Aaron Young, Farmer pointed to the famous case of Finnigan v New Zealand Rugby Football Union, in which two club rugby members took a case against the decision of the NZRFU council to accept an invitation for the All Blacks to tour South Africa in 1985.

"The basis of the court's decisions was that, by sending a team to South Africa, the Rugby Union would be in breach of its own constitutional objective of fostering the sport of rugby, by virtue of the resulting harm to the reputation of the sport and to New Zealand rugby in particular," Farmer wrote.

"The Squadron's objectives are similar and the conduct of the next Defence in its name in Saudi Arabia would cause similar harm."

He later wrote to Team New Zealand's directors, and former chairman Sir Stephen Tindall, arguing that the selection of Jeddah would be "irresponsible and seriously damage New Zealand's international reputation as a country that respects human rights, including gender equity".

[...]

Another legal expert appears to be hinting at issues which could face the America's Cup if it were taken to the Middle East.

On Sunday Hamish Ross, an America's Cup lawyer who Team New Zealand boss Grant Dalton accused of a "devious" plan to challenge the validity of Ineos Team UK as challenger of record for the next America's Cup, posted on Facebook on Sunday, about an "important, but little known" judgment of the New York Supreme Court in 2009 that he said could affect all future venue selections.

Ross quoted a decision in light of Société Nautique de Genève's decision to select Ras Al Khaimah (part of the United Arab Emirates) as the venue for the 33rd America's Cup.

The posturing and legal maneuvering is the AC, this is what wealthy men do to each other when they want stuff. What happens on the water is the sideshow!

That's actually clever and funny :-)  maybe we are in the matrix and the real AM involves well  funded teams who bring brilliant minds and technological prowess to winning the paralegal sh*t storm, mud slinging and posturing that is the actual AM. ! Quote from the Matrix Herald  "At the moment the America’s Cup looks like a regatta for sailors and designers  of immense talent and drive , distracting us from the real deal of winning the billionaires pissing contest . Why do we have to put up with this sailing crap between cycles, its over so fast .

Saw a classic sign in Sailors Corner last night-Americas Cup supporters gear 80% off---  I would suggest that it sums up the feeling of most New Zealanders and a fair percentage of yachties after what Grant has done shopping it offshore.

Good to see the open letter in the Herald yesterday, love to see a poll of members now, most I have spoken to with the exception of current commodore and next commodore are in favour of holding it here . "Dalts" is slowly looking more isolated with his view of whats best.....
