Dire state of Marine Media

Recommended Posts

At least on this site many and varied get to have a say, regardless of the quality or amount of thought put in before bursting into print.

Magazines have long given up doing Boat tests in this country favouring reviews -so as not to upset the importer or builder with any negative feedback-advertising revenue not subscribers rule.

To be fair Boating NZ at least has printed some interesting articles of late, and Keiths Professional Skipper does not pull punches with the powers that be.

Online it appears to be worse with Sail World NZ repeating all press releases from Team Dalton without question, then questioning why NZ has been locked down at all !! Poor Richard needs to familiarize himself with some of the UK sites, full of incisive and probing informed journalism.

Where for example are the questions on the new AC teams , Burling and Tuke's future, the great coup of grabbing the talented Outteridge of Devonport -interviews with the crop of Kiwi professional yachties who are quietly practicing their trade as the motor racing counterparts are in Europe.

Moaning about lockdown whilst those around you get on with their jobs is not yachting reporting -I guess the gun lobby sleeping at Mercer always has room for one more......

Once upon a time the results of Saturdays racing would be published on Monday morning in the Herald, now the yachting mags I see seem devoted to selling ridiculously expensive new production boats with accompanying editorial about how Sarah and Michael wanted real stone benchtops, 3 showers instead of 2 and how challenged the design team were but saved the day with carbon and 300k. (insert pictures of modern apartment with mast on top and vases with elegant floral displays)

was my role on Sunday night during the early 90s to fax in results before 10.00pm,which meant going in to work.
