ex Elly 217
That looks like a different Cat 3 to what we have here. They are talking about Round Ireland being Cat 3 - whereas in NZ, the Round NI and Round NZ are Cat 2+. However a keel has fallen off a yacht here. In 2008 'Time To Burn' skipper drowned, but they were not racing at the time. However, YNZ still tightened up the safety rules regarding welded attachments. In NZ, an inspector can request the withdrawal of a keelbolt for any category (yep, even cat 5).

Time to Burn completed the 2008 RNI, sailed back to Napier and was then sailing up to Tauranga with same crew as the keel needed removing as they suspected an issue Keel fell off at daybreak within 20nn ? of Tauranga, Clarkie the crew was down below at the time and drowned. Hindsight they should have removed the keel in Napier Yacht is now called Omega, it had a conventional keel fitted after this, originally it had a Z keel
Island Time 1,278
I understand that they were also warned, by the designer IIRC, NOT to sail to Auckland for the repair, as the keel might come off.
