Norwester 3
Aluminium mast.
Norwester 3
I am going to sand off the paint on my mast and just go bare alloy. I am looking for waxing or other easy polishing ideas.
aardvarkash10 943
wax implies regular maintenance to keep in coated and buffed etc. That would get tiresome pretty quickly for me - your view may be different.
harrytom 640
Once paint off,let it oxidise naturally, the oxidation is alloy protection, may not look shiny and new but start polishing regularly and you are doing more harm than good.
ex Elly 197
Some people use a clear coating called Nyalic on their masts: http://www.nyalic.co.nz/
raz88 96
Also consider having the old coating media(soda?) blasted rather than sanding? Might leave you with a better job.
Norwester 3
Thanks for the good information. Soda blasting might just be the trick and that Nyalic is available here so I am going to try it.

aardvarkash10 943
Crew member funlovingcriminal did the hard mahi on his Farr 1020, but refinished in black. Process is the same however. Brass Tacks - My Boat - Crew.org.nz He also wrote up a bit about the process at about the same time - if you do a search you will find it.
Island Time 1,211
Nyalic will work for a while, but will Crack and peel eventually. I considered all this, and decided to repaint. Too hard/expensive to remove all the paint to leave bare. Sanded, epoxy prime and topcoat, with brush/roller. Came out pretty good. Last paint job lasted over 20 years.
