Today’s pillock

Recommended Posts

I think the article is a bit of a classic NZ country town no news, news i.e Mrs Jones cat got stuck in a tree. "Big boat has to alter course and made lots of honking noise so we got really excited"

I would not be making sweeping judgements without talking to the sailors, we know they were in the wrong but why? Most people do not play chicken with big boats. Anyone who has sailed the entrance knows about big ships so I suspect they may have been newbies, but they could also have had engine failure and it doesn't look like a lot of wind.

Still waiting on the anti registration crowd here to explain how you track a vessel down thats not registered.May have a name(trailer fizz) how do track it ,last seen heading??

Doesnt need to be a huge cost ,only cost would change of ownership details,we do change of details for cars, life time vhf call signs if we want to keep same call sign need to infornm coastgurad(current handlers of it)when transfering to different vessel.

Don't bother. Just get the HM to pull a few over every second sunday, fine them and advertise it in the papers

It doesn't need to be a great cost....no. But that has never been the case with any form of rego in NZ. The problem is that whoever implements such a thing needs to be funded by it as well. There not as many Boats as there are Cars. So the cost is going to be overly expensive just to cover the infrustructure created to impliment it.
In every Country in the World that use Registration, that registration has been skewed over the years to do two things. Revenue gather and regulate rules etc that actually have nothing to do with what the Rego was initially created to do. Over years, the Suits simply see a means of using the rego system as something already established to tax other things Marine related.
For instance, we nearly had something like this here in Marlborough. The Port company wanted millions of dollars to put in "navigational systems" in the Sounds for Shipping. We now have Tide stations, Tracking and all sorts all for the Harbor Master and Commercial Shipping to get info that is already available else where. But it wa pushed as a safety thing. To fund it, they initially wanted to charge every boat owner that used the Sounds. Because there was no Rego system in situation, they could not find an easy way of doing so. In the end, all Commercial Vessels had a considerable fee imposed in them.

And there lies the problem, how often have you seen the HM vessel out n about r even a police vessel?

I know coastguard dont want to be the rule enforcers but with amount of vessels they have perhaps its get near time to part of a govt funded agency and do the job of enforcement.

Licensing and registration won't get them out .

Couldn't disagree more.

As soon as you move CG from Safety to Policing, everything changes.

Not saying that it would certainly follow the same here, but in both Oz and the US, the Coastguard have become a very harsh rules enforcement authority and not an organisation that is there for rescue, aid and education.
However, I do think that the NZ CG could be given a tooth or two at least and be able to enforce some laws. Although, the difficult part of that is the authorisation of CG people to be able to stop, board and enforce. It's not all that easy. People with such authority require special training. Not something you are going to get Volunteers doing.

I doubt if many CG volunteers would want to be involved in enforcement - it's not what they signed up for so unless you want to turn the organisation on it's head and also write a huge cheque... it's a no go.

If we are not prepared to accept mandatory education (and ergo licencing), the boating community in its many forms needs to step up and apply strong, consistent social pressure to improve on-water behaviour.

What about an app called “todays pillock “ you could upload the pillock of the day and other app users could keep an eye out and apply pressure to said pillock if they continue to be a pillock

And that fine is a frickin' joke.

You can own a very expensive (or not expensive) boat/yacht/powerboat and create mayhem and the fines/justice is a joke.

There are plenty of examples of this in NZ in the past.

Fines of $200 are meaningless to boaties - you own a boat (in most instances) $200 is peanuts. No deterrent .
