SSANZ Triple Series 2022

Yeah , starts with p, ends with ussies

2 years ago we entered small boat and were told we had to race short haul and should be in long haul. Paid for 6 races and 2 prizegivings, got 4 races, no prizegivings and smashed in 2 of them. Still went out and kicked arse but decided to sit this year out.

This year half the boats we beat in short haul and higher divisions are racing in small boat division!

Going forward we need to revamp all the above

This year we just wanted to complete a full series with a prize giving plus a raftup after the last race.

Halfway there, next year we need to revamp the soft cock division

Have to say it was a bit of a let down having 2 race series and no knees up but that's the big C-19 for you, nothing the committee could do about it. On your other point about the divisions, the risk is that if it becomes too easy, then it's less of a race and more of a day out on the water which is ok if you're getting into shorthanded racing but if you're experienced or driving a 40 footer you should probably do the longer courses.

For those of us on the Railblaza course, how does the short course work with race 3?

We know the finish will be somewhere near Moutihe Island. We have to round Motukorea Buoy to starboard, then Bean Rock to port, then finish at Motuihe.

PIC - Railblaza Short Course: approx. 25nm Start, passing Motutapu Island (port), Rakino (starboard), The Haystack (Orarapa) Island (starboard), Motuihe Island (starboard), Brown Island (port), Motukorea Buoy (starboard), Bean Rock (Port) to Finish.

Does this mean we can do a 180 at Motukorea Buoy, and go straight to the finish?  Or do we sail up till we are abeam of Bean Rock (on our port side) turn around and back to the finish? Or should we in fact round Bean Rock buoy to port, then turn around, go outside Bean Rock, and back to the finish?

Probably add Illiomama buoy after Motukorea buoy and drop Bean rock

But that’s getting a bit ahead yet

Call will be made on finish location in a week, could even end up with a raftup in Islington Bay yet if the weathers not playing nice

Handicaps will be posted on Thursday as per previous two races

What are the thoughts/options, does SSANZ want feedback/comments/ideas? Will competitors be surveyed? (in due course after current series is all finished up)

Having sat on and presided over, enough volunteer club committees in my limited life, something I became astutely aware of, was no shortage of ideas from the membership base ;)

The membership base comes up with many awesome ideas.  But the committee generally only has enough people-power to get so much done.

If I could be so bold as suggest, that anyone who wants to make a difference, contacts the committee and offers to set up and run a end-to-end survey to get the ideas/options from the membership base.   I feel confident that they would welcome you with open arms :)

Yes.

So long as Bean Rock is left to port after Motukorea it doesn't make any difference how far to port it is left.

Think of the coastal classic course -  "little barrier to stb, poor knights to stb". It does not matter how far to stb these are left.   We, (generally), go no where near Little Barrier.

In the past there have been some tricky courses from clubs, one I remember very clearly, over 20yrs ago, was reso(p), chelsea(s), stanley(p), finish(odm).

Of course there was no reason at all to go anywhere near Stanley... Stb rounding of the ODM left Stanley to port...  boom! Some boats went the long way, some didn't...

The problem with asking for suggestions is if we don’t adopt them then people get offended. And they may not be adopted for all sorts of reasons that aren’t apparent to the one that suggests them. Often opposing suggestions that make more sense.

Covid has brought forward the opportunity to try lots of small tweaks, one that’s here to stay are the 3 mass starts. One that needs work is the Evolution Sails 2 division, this needs splitting on waterline length, weather it should be 2 or 3 divisions I’m not 100% on. It’s the growth area and needs work but with any splitting there’s always winners and losers and it’s really hard to write a NoR then hope you get an even split, maybe this should just state that we will split this so there are no more than xx yachts in each ?

Happy to have all thoughts via email to racing@ssanz.co.nz probably best to save these until after last race

Also if your keen we are looking for race management to run this series, maybe you’ve been sailing for years and wish to put something back.  I’m off to the tropics next winter

The role of most sailing committees is to further their constitutional aims and represent their memberships' interests, canvassing participants would seem a natural part of that.

Your comment does raise questions about fundamental governance and what metrics are used to evaluate success, if participation is one then feedback may be useful.  What you're politely saying is that participants should put their money where their mouth is. Pretty stifling IMHO, when the question is would the committee be open to feedback? I read that as a pretty clear indication that at least one competitor has some to offer.

We are open to feedback as I said above, but don’t necessarily expect everything to be changed to suit the loudest voice.

The main metric on success for us is entry numbers and comparison of these against the Coastal and previously the Akl Regatta

SSANZ is run by enthusiastic volunteers on a not for profit basis, there’s no way to please all the people all the time, if you think you can do better please come and help, it will open your eyes to how much is done by so few, all for nothing other than providing good yachting.

SSANZ do great work.

Every two handed year is different and there has been the odd occasion where an initiative hasn't been done quite right on reflection.

But don't stop innovating. That is why we keep coming back.

I'm with Jono. SSANZ and the events they run are awesome and you could say world leading. Two handed racing took off in NZ a long time before the rest of the world caught on.

To someone's question above the 88 fleet has been having an excellent series with elastic bands between boats in the first two races. The skipper of a bright green tri was reported as looking up the Firth at a bunch of 12 very similar boats line astern and saying "That looks like a one design fleet" :)

We have 9 in the series in our division and another three elsewhere in the event. We have 12 entered for Saturday and are headed to 14-15. Dean and Karen Drummond are giving us a lesson on their Flash new steed and are also favourites to take out the mixed doubles trophy but Zib and Bicky will be chasing hard!.

We have to bow down to the Piedy series entry numbers but if the weather plays ball we will try and out number them in the raft up after match kinda like a quiet night we had a few years ago

War Machine votes for Snapper Bay Motuihe as the venue if we keep the West in the Southerly

Thanks SSANZ and we'll see you out there and after for a sip from the loving cup

Snapper Bay is definitely a contender but let’s give it another day and a half for the forecast to firm up.

Calypso if it goes NW as Metvuw is saying or Issy Bay if it’s looking windier

Tomorrow night we will make the call
