alibaba 75
It made me think about other tragedies when people have got trapped under an upturned boat, and were unable to get out because of their lifejackets. I wonder if we should have a quick release on lifejackets. I know that I would not be able to get out of my lifejacket in a hurry.
harrytom 629
Being a charter vessel, would they have self inflating jackets?IF that was the case, being underneath with an inflated jacket then.
Psyche 571
Pretty substantial vessel as you would expect in Kaikoura. Just a guess but perhaps if it was a whale collision it sounded and they turned to avoid it and the chine hit and flipped the boat. Boats are not designed for sudden impacts and theres plenty of hard points to knock people out. The water there this time of year is freezing at around 11 degrees which would not have helped. I have been out in boats like this and have always felt really safe.
waikiore 375
That particular hull style does not have a good record in NZ, very low freeboard everyone rushing to one side means the AVS is reached very early as the tubes go under. Funny if they hit a whale that neither outboard kicked up..
