Heading out on Wednesday...

Recommended Posts

Just as the weather is at its most sh*t, we are heading out to south-eastern Waiheke and then up to Kawau.

If you see Stepping Out around, pop over for a beer.  Or rum as that may be more weather-appropriate.

Cheers, Ashton and Jos

Same. Already out. Currently off Matenga point by Blackpool. Few other crew.orgers out too. Bad Kitty at rocky bay currently. Some are home/hiding.

Happy new year to all!

We’re back at Gulf Harbour. Quite a few others coming back in today from either Rakino of Coromandel with a few hairy rides in the easterly swell. I’ve got more leave in February so fingers crossed for some settled weather.

We've come home after a week in Coro. Had never been to Te Kouma before (only been a boat owner for 18 months, 9 of which was a re-fit). Blown away by the beauty of this place, especially so close to home in the Weiti River. Came back on Sunday with the easterly pushing us along nicely, top speed of 10.5 with the number 2 up, surfing down a few swells much to the delight of my kids (not so much the Mrs😅). Will definitely be back there soon. Favourite spot - Rangipukea Island

Grey windy day tucked right up in Karaka Bay, been 20-30 kts E on an off since New Year, not unpleasant but not marvellous either, probably going to depart in the gap before the next system arrives. Ive never seen the place so empty in the high season. The fishing has been spectacular btw, but made the trip over to Fitzroy to smoke some snappers and not a soul at Smokehouse, totally deserted. Something you dont see often and counted 25-30 boats sheltering in Kiwiriki, the same in Kiararara, Im guessing not much more than a hundred or two visiting boats out here in total compared to about 10 million usually!

+1 for Te Kouma and surrounds .  Recently picked a boat up from there and was also blown away , we will be going cruising there when we get a caravan .

Looking at Metvuw, I don't know why you would bother heading away on Wednesday. Only a small window then the next system arrives and it's a real humdinger.

Dunno if metvuw has updated yet but windy is now showing it missing us by quite a bit . North  of Auckland that is , bay of plenty/east cape might get a hosing .

With the forecasted rain and wind it wasn't worth us staying out with young kids onboard! So we have just made the trip back from Te Kouma to Gulf Harbour in 3 hours 40 minutes, was pretty wild out there but thankfully we were going with the wind! Top speed of 14knots and average of almost 9knots, boat felt like a heavy tug boat as we were provisioned for another 10days on the water.

We may head out again for a few days if this weather clears up!

The new maps on Metvuw show the next depression running straight over the North Island next Tuesday/Wednesday. Lots of rain and a barometric pressure of only 984. I can't see the point in heading out into that.

Been anchored in Kawau since NY day.  Been blowing old boots and stronger boot blowing predicted tomorrow.  As there is further boot blowing bonkers weather predicted next week, I may run back to GH Fri or Sat and wait for it to blow through…summer is bound to start again sometime…

We came back a few days ago from Rotoroa, had an interesting  night in north harbour when wind changed from SW to E at 4am, had a few big powerboats anchored really close, but no major dramas, we have no fixed timeline so  back in the marina u till favorable weather arrives

We are up at Whangaroa. Not too bad up here. A few puffs and plenty of rain but well manageable and has eased right off now. We decided to break up the 5 boat raft up just to be safe and had 18 people on board for dinner and a movie last night.

Raft up image from New years and the other one out the back of the boat this evening.
