Winter cleaning of halyards, topping lift etc

Recommended Posts

In prep for winter I have pulled a few of the more dirty halyards and other mast lines.

What is the 'preferred' approach/method to clean these ?

Started with a week of soaking in Nappy San and Algicide (pool cleaner).

It would appear you do not put them in a washing machine !

Actually you can put them in a washing machine. Just put them in a pillow case first. And use gentle detergents. Anything harsh can cause damage.

Better still take them to a self serv laundromat $2 a wash

yup - the washing machines are huge, you can put everything in in one load.  And you can walk away while they are banging around in there.

Do remember to remove the anchor from its rode.

Have cycled thru soaking in laundry powder for 2-3 days, scrubbing with brush an rinsing…. Then repeating the cycle. It is working well.

Avoided buying new washing machine 😉

DO NOT USE THE Washing machine- It will bugger them.  Pull threads out etc.

I have done it yearly for about two decades with no ill effect. I use mesh 'bags' to avoid major tangles and I do not wash anything with metal hardware. Bare Dyneema is also kept out of this.

40 C program. Normal detergent.
