Unoccupied liferaft found

Searchers looking for three men and their yacht missing in the Antarctic since Tuesday (22 February NZDT) have this morning located an unoccupied and damaged liferaft 45 miles north of the yacht’s original distress beacon alert.

The 4-6 person liferaft was found about 9am (NZDT) by a helicopter from the Steve Irwin. A sea boat from the Steve Irwin was sent out to recover the liferaft, which has now been examined. A serial number on the liferaft is currently being checked by Norwegian authorities to determine whether it may have come from the Berserk.

The liferaft, which is of the same make as that carried on the Berserk, has a torn canopy and is missing its first aid kit and survival knife. However, there is no sign that the liferaft has ever been occupied. Evidence also indicates it has floated free from the vessel and not been released manually.

The sea boat and helicopter from the Steve Irwin are continuing to search the area. McMurdo Station has been providing refuelling assistance for the helicopter search.

Three ships and a helicopter have so far been involved in the four day search coordinated by the Rescue Coordination Centre New Zealand (RCCNZ), in an effort to locate the Berserk and three of its crew members.

The rescue mission was launched after RCCNZ picked up a signal from a distress beacon registered to the Berserk about 5pm on Tuesday 22 February (NZDT). The yacht’s position at that time was 18 nautical miles (33km) north of Scott Base, in the Ross Sea. There has been no communication from the vessel since, and its distress beacon is no longer transmitting. There are believed to be three people on board.

The first ship to search was the HMNZS Wellington, which has since returned to New Zealand. The Professor Kromov, carrying 50 passengers will continue to search as it heads back across the search area towards Antarctica today, before continuing on its voyage.

RCCNZ and Norwegian rescue authorities continue to communicate by satellite phone with two crew members ashore as part of a Norwegian Antarctic expedition who are providing information to assist rescuers in locating their missing companions at sea. The pair are now headed for Scott Base.

The Berserk is a 48ft (14m) steel hulled sailboat. The vessel had dropped the two explorers onto Antarctica for the purpose of attempting to reach the South Pole. Four of the all male crew are understood to be from Norway, and a fifth from the United Kingdom.

A further update will be provided once more information becomes available.

Yea well, it would apear that someting has gone wrong, but sadly I fear we may never know enought to tell if it was a failure or lack of prep, or an unavoidable/ predictable catastraphic event?

I must say the boat when loaded up with 2 Quads and hundreds of litres of Fuel on deck did look precarious in Auckland. I wonder if she would have got a NZ cat 1? Believe they had succesfully droped the quads and shore expedition.

On another note and I think someone commented a few days ago, is the rate of atrition in the RNI race expected and acceptable? While the conditions were obviously nasty and lumpy, 35-40 somewhere for Westcoast and Welly must have been an expectation?

Sorry to be so slow to respond AC.

And they only made it 220km of 1400 odd kms.

Were found suffering frostbite I read on a Nordic site.

More like a Shackleton than an Amundson attempt really.
