Sail GP - Westhaven shut down.

Recommended Posts

Just received advice that no boats can enter or leave Westhaven marina for 3 days from 2pm until 7pm as the exclusion zone for Sail GP will not allow this.

Now just awaiting the news we will not be able to access our boats/carparks, or our clubs during that time.

I was joking of course, but blocking access to a thousand boat marina over a weekend in the middle of summer without leaving an access lane seems a bit rude

You also have to pay to have your boat near the course, I believe all the slots, or the presold tickets have been filled already. Was around 800 per day

Presales open on Monday.

But yes, you need to buy a ticket to "Bring your own boat"...

Or there is the waterfront grandstand and the waterfront premium.

In saying that, I am just a pleb, so the presales I'm signed up to may not be the presales for important people / high net worth individuals etc. It is possible all the boat tickets have already gone to corporate hospo and high net worth types.

Westhaven should probably reimburse marina occupiers for lack of access.

Is that Westhaven's fault? Maybe which ever arm of Auckland Council approves events should compensate others affected. Or Sail GP ?

I've never understood the word presale. Makes no sense.

It is a way of gaging interest, so they can work out how much to rheem you for on the pricing...

The BYOB fees are extraordinary , since I believe Christchurch was free, though they are offering access inside the exclusion zone , and your proximity to the course looks a lot closer than Chch. Still land based with the big screens etc and sleeping on my boat looks the best bet.

Only if you have a big boat.

Grandstand is $187 each. So get a 48 footer plus 3 friends, and you'll save money!

The BYOB was for 2 days, where as the grandstand is for 1 day.

Would have been $628 BYOB for the family, $750 to take the family for one day. Kids are more interested in watching it on TV and me putting that cash into their bank accounts... Especially since they are getting their heads around compounding interest.

Disappointed the sub 49fter sold out so fast. Logged on about 3pm and it was gone (once I worked out how to get the website to go).

Anyone know if / how you can watch the practice day? We are keen to see these boats in person doing their stuff, doesn't have to be racing, in that the coverage is better on TV for watching the racing, but be great for the kids to see these things on the water.
