On another navy matter I see that the Captain of the Canterbury has been stood down pending an investigation. Be interesting to see what that is about as well.

'It bewilders me as to why he was there'

"Manu, a Samoan local who saw the HMNZS Manawanui sailing dangerously close to the reef as it ran aground, said he wondered why it was so close in the first place."

"He crashed on a bommie."

It is suggested there was a loss of power? To propulsion or Nav electrics?

For that kind of reef definition you would think they would use a smaller, shallower draft more manouverable vessel. Bad result all round.

The HMNZS Manawanui, aground in Samoa.

Maybe it's time to bring back sailing, as in real sailing, as part of Navy basic training, including basic navigation.

3 navy yachts entered in Bay Week. Probably in coastal too

Interesting that she is a Diesel electric ship, with Azimuth pods plus bow thrusters. She had 4 generators, and one would hope they are completely independent and fault tolerant systems.

We had one barge between us and a boat we were passing just off Tapeka at Bay Week. We were leeward boat and had to go down to avoid a collision. Even then his kite Brushed against our spreaders. Silly bastard on the helm just gave us a blank look when we were calling him up.

Doesn't fill you with confidence

I skippered a tug for BHP for a number of years with twin Ulstein asimuthing drives... super manouverable even without a bow thruster.

I have a gut feeling this will come down to a maintenance failure as has been so prevelent in many such cases in NZ in recent years.

Remember the issue the navy had with diesel bug recently.

Bay week a couple of years ago, 1 minute to the gun and the windlass let go and the anchor headed for the bottom. A good 20 metres ran out before they heard our yells.

Yes the bug, but also Cook straight ferry reliability, and the NZAF 757s, breaking down embarassingly while visiting foreign lands.

That would be even more embarrassing, the guy with all the gold braid and fancy dress (can't remember his official title, something like supreme rear commodore sea lord) said that Manawanui had just completed a 'maintenance period' before this deployment, AND passed all of their testing before being signed off...

This is most likely directly attributable to the loss of hard won experience in the workforce, add in the lowest tender wins mentality and here we are. NZers are not known for long term thinking and investment for the future.

So true on all accounts... and I am guilty of the first sentance, but at least I contribute to NZ by paying a ####load of tax in NZ and I also own a boat.... which feeds many more $$$$$$ into the NZ economy.

I found some of the insights in this article interesting...

Good article, I suspect there will be a cascade of failures that led to the grounding but ultimately it will come down to underfunding and shortcuts somewhere. Losing power is forgivable for DIY yachties operating 30 plus year old diesels but not for a naval vessel.
