ex Elly 243
Wow! At 1.30pm they were 18km offshore from 90 Mile Beach when Carey’s shipmate suddenly stabbed him in the head. “I’ve never been more terrified in my life”, Carey said. He barricaded himself into a living space below deck until help arrived about six hours later, at 7.30pm. Why did someone not try to save his boat? Is it because if you have a conviction, police treat you badly? Or was it because of the location? Maybe there weren't any experienced sailors in the police or coastguard willing to sail an unknown vessel back around North Cape, or down to New Plymouth.
harrytom 689
Saving lives over rule saving vessel I presume?
alibaba 83 Posted yesterday at 02:34 AM Share Posted yesterday at 02:34 AM I don't know how many of us would take on the responsibility of helming a large unknown yacht, without at least two crew, especially not knowing the condition of the engine, sails, safety gear, and seaworthiness of the hull. If this had happened close to a harbour, I guess it would have been possible to call the local harbourmaster and get it towed in, but Ahipara is an exposed coast, many miles from anywhere. I am disappointed that the police however, did not at least offer to contact a salvage operator to get it towed to a harbour of owner;s choice.
