Hire a Racing yacht in Auckland

There is the odd MSA registered race boat about that can be chartered, my understanding is always with the skipper though...

That's the key issue in NZ. If you charter* your boat that is a commercial operation in which case you have to have the boat all MSAed up. That can often be a freaking nitemear in itself, and a usually a costly one.

But assuming someone does that then it's all good. BUT then if you drive a commercial boat you need to have tickets to suit, something most don't have.

* - If you let a mate borrow your boat for a few hours and he says 'thanks, here have a chocolate fish', that is arguably a commercial transaction** in which case you should have your boat MSAed up.

** - arguably a commercial transaction in the eyes of bureaucracy even if in the eyes of normal people it's nothing of the sort. But bureaucracy has taken a few to task for accepting a 'reward' in return for assorted services and across many industries. It's happening in aviation, boats, diving and a few others I know of. Sadly a chocolate fish given in return for anything, be it tiny of massive, is a 'reward', just like handing over money, beers or your sister, the one with the marginal morels.

So at the end of the day chartering boats for a situation as asked by NZ Moth is pretty much a no go in NZ due to over zealous, often ridiculous job justifying NZ bureaucrats.

Agreed, the MSA is the main 'stopper'. But I wonder how much the commercial reality would be as well.

For instance, say I had (I wish) a First 40.7 or a Sydney 38 or any other c$250k-$400k yacht I wanted to charter out for racing. Would people be prepared to pay $1,000 for 24 hours mid week (ie a Wed night race) $2,500-$3,000 for a weekend and say $10,000 for a coastal classic - as they would be the rough numbers I reckon you would be up for, plus $5,000+ insurance excess.

Thoughts??

Since when was your sister a reward KM? Thats like punishment :-P

So you know her then :) :)

Yes it would be punishment and more then you probably imagine. I know of 2 Crew.Orgers who bosses have run into her in her professional capacity...... and lost big time on both occasions.

If you read it again I did say 'your sister' and for good reasons ;)

Good question ab1974. New thread with that one I reckon, it could be good to see what everyone thinks.

Your best bet is to 'borrow' a boat and when tidying it up at the end forget to take off those rums and a envelope of cash ;)

And both parties have a long tall glass of 'keep they gobs firmly closed'.

Probably works some of the time, but when you have a complete stranger 'borrowing' your boat I suspect a formal agreement would ease your nerves. Also when something goes 'wrong' wouldn't like to be exposed. Picture worse case - significant damage or worse to crew member, investigation, coroner ....... no MSA cert ........ :problem: :problem:

A bunch of us chartered a 35ft racing yacht from a private owner for the RORC series a few years ago in the UK, forget exactly how much it cost, something about GBP20,000 I think. Which was probably about 1/5 of the value of the the boat at the time.

So it can be done but I've not heard of it happening much in NZ.
