H28 yacht purchase delivery gone wrong

Recommended Posts

This is what happened when someone bought an old H28 named Muritai, and tried to sail from Bay of Islands back to Auckland.

At Cape Rodney they encountered 30 knot winds, 4m seas, the gooseneck broke, they lost the sheets on the genoa, and engine stopped working.

The conditions were so bad that the Mangawhai Coastguard parked their boat in Marsden Cove marina, instead of returning home.

The potential loss of reputation was so bad that the sailors had to seek anonymity, and have their names changed in press articles.

The Herald article is a bit confused, but the Coastguard article has better detail.

Yeah it's a big deal for Coastguard that people feel comfortable to call them when they need help. For example CG generally don't notify any incidents or accidents to the authorities unless it involves their own boats.

I do think that planning on 7tkts in an H28 was an interesting one. Do you guys often have 3ks of favourable tide up that way hahaha?

Possibly not so experienced, by the picture the main has not been secured and they are reaching with a no1 up -which would not be ideal on the wind in 30 knots , motor running or not is irrelevant, many years ago I delivered one of these to Wellington v v slow on the wind -but on a reach slid along well enough though the seas running in and filling the cockpit because there is no bouyancy aft to lift the stern was tedious and gave me great respect for the two boys on Ben Gunn .
