Black Panther 1,849
I just suffered through 30 mins of another youtube warrior ( I'm going to sail solo around the world, I'll learn how as i go). Only went about 50 miles and parked it on some rocks. But what got me was the plaintive " I checked with AI and it said I'd be ok to anchor here". It was a lee shore. Am I just getting old and grumpy?

Bad Kitty 356
15 years ago most boats that were cruising had some sort of sailing history in the family. 1 couple we met were the exception, Aussies that bought a yacht in the UK, did a 1 week RYA course & sailed back to Aus. But it was unusual. Now, when you’re chattering around a fire on a beach, a surprising number of cruisers are sailing because they watched sailing la vagabond/parlay revival/red seas or whatever on YouTube. No experience, just went & did it. Pretty cool in some ways, pretty scary in others!

Psyche 976
I find it hard to knock people for wanting to escape the madness, if Mr Ai sailor wasnt running aground and having the time of his life he'd be stuck in some cubicle working for the man until all the life is sucked out and gone... The more the merrier I say, just stand well back while they are on their learning curve and dont sign on as crew🤣
Bad Kitty 356
I guess one huge difference is the availability of information/support/education now. With Starlink, youtube, google etc. if you’re not a complete idiot, and are open minded enough to learn, anything is possible. Whereas 20 years ago if you had some mechanical failure, and didn’t know how to fix it, you were screwed until you found someone to help. Now, 15 minutes on YouTube & you’re up to your elbows in the engine bay. May not help when you have 50 knots across the deck for the first time in the middle of a passage, but technology does help with a lot of aspects of cruising. Even the No Foreign Land app, the amount of information there to support cruising is amazing. Pic just because! 1 1

I think this issue is Ai and how people use it. There is a major difference between asking "is this bay good to anchor in?" and "is this bay good to anchor in a Sou' Wester?" One little piece of information or context to the question completely changes the answer. The bay may be fantastic to anchor in normally, but in a Sou' Wester it's completely sh*t. My worst experience with Ai was simply googling what time the SailGP was in Halifax. It gave us the correct NZ time, but the wrong day. Couldn't handle the international date line. We were all planning to watch the racing on a Saturday morning and couldn't find it, cue disappointed kids. That was the simple google Ai tool, which is close to rubbish. I regularly pull it up on errors. I've started asking it if it's sure the answers are correct. I've even asked it to recommend more accurate Ai tools. The response was funny. Now, I'm by no means an IT or Ai expert, but a lot of the stuff I've been asking it, it appears to find comments or opinions from forums (not unlike this one) then present those comments as facts. It doesn't appear to differentiate sources of information for reliability or likely accuracy, but when the answer is presented by some powerful Ai tool, instead of some load-mouth on a forum, people place higher weight on it's reliability. People should probably read the warning at the bottom of the page when using the google Ai. Def wouldn't use it for decisions impacting life or property. At best I'd use it to find more reliable sources of information. As with any computer, sh*t in equals sh*t out.

You still need to decide who on YouTube you trust, out of the 25 videos available. I also am talking more about general information availability, I still don’t trust AI at all. So I’m off track really from the initial post.

The real question would be if those automated systems can handle the jandal in yesterday's Sou'Wester.

Apparently the next “big thing” in AI land is a chip that can change the weather conditions on demand… for a fee of course.
