Guest
A great weekend's sailing was had by all sailors throught the fleet of 23 crews who turned out for the 51st running of the Mistral Championships generously sponsored by Helly Hansen, Kiwi Yachting and Doyles Sails and hosted by Tamaki Yacht Club. Saturday started with ideal conditions, 10-15knts south westerly and 2 races were run inside the reef before lunch. During the second race and over lunch the wind increased to a solid 18-20knts. 3 races were run in a growing chop after lunch, again inside the reef. During race 3 the wind build further and a number of heavy breeze lines moved down the course catching many crews out. Overnight Andrew Stone and Mitchell Ford were very tight leaders from Matthew O'Maigh & Arielle Rogers-Jenkins, with Nick & Matthew Brewer in 3rd. In the non-spinnaker fleet the condtions took their toll on a number of crews as this is where traditionally some of the younger forward-hands compete. Sunday dawned with lighter winds, but a forecast that suggested change later on. The race committee got the fleet going on schedule, this time outside the reef. 3 further races were run in a shifty, south-south westerly ranging from 5-12knots. The crews who were able to spot the shifts benefitted most and by race 6 Andrew and Mitchell had the championship in the bag. However, not one to go in early they also took the gun in race 7 with Matthew O'maigh gambling on the final beat to come through from 5th to 2nd and firmly cement his 2nd overall. A great weekend of racing, with a competitors dinner at the club on Saturday and prizegiving tea on Sunday. Thank you to the race committee and those who helped with catering and shore duties.
