Stern Tube vs stern gland leaks

So we learnt a bit more about our boat. Revolution Farr 1104

Last winter we redid the stern gland. We'd had water coming into the engine sump for a while. Considering the stern gland was about 5 years old something wasn't kosher. We pulled the boat and had the gland repacked as there was dead grease in there. Memo to self - don't keep 20 year old tins of grease on boat.

Over the summer we still had water coming in. Something wasn't right. A big torch and a small adult later we sighted a trickle coming in between the hull and the stern tube.More when running, nothing when still. So we pulled the boat again and got the boatbuilder to have a look. At first glance he couldn't see anything amiss. Go back and have another look we said. Sure enough, the rescorcinal glue had dissolved away and we had a tube that fell out when unscrewed, and lots of dampness in the glass.

We got it all dried out, rebogged in and we are as sweet as a nut with cobwebs already forming in the sump.

All good now but owners of older boats may want to consider stern tube leaks if they are strugggling to keep water at bay.

I had a similar thing with the rudder tube on Apparition with water appearing in the bilge every time it rained. It turned out that the rudder tube had completely parted company with the deck but this was hidden by the teak overlay. The scary part was that the tube wasn't properly attached to the hull either. Once the rudder was removed it only took a few taps with a hammer to drive the whole rudder tube out through the hull!
