Good to see im not the only one to not be able to use the you tube link while replying.

I usually give up after two try's and let someone else to fix it. Squid usually does it

I am rather glad we didnt go sailing. Would of been a very wet day with lots of rain... After all, were going out to have fun right?

Some interesting race management today, but a strong fleet of 27 boats and a noticeable step up by the What's News guys!

What's News, lying low and fresh off the back of their formal warning for 'too much partying' in the retirement village marina, seemed to find another gear and nailed 3rd on line which was enough for a tidy win on corrected time. The ring in crew on WT managed a gun finally getting one over Planet x, but that wasn't enough for handicap and we had to settle for 3rd. Settlers Reach sporting a new square head main, prod, gennaker and code zero came in second on corrected.

Nice weather today. Apart from when it rained. Looking forward to next time.

Yeah, the line was pretty short which probably contributed to the 1st start being a bit messy. We weren't quite sure about how much water there was up by the 1A mark, so we were a little nervous about taking the lift too high up towards the river. Least we saw under the keel was 2m so we were ok. I imagine the Planet X guys would have been worried though. They draw a lot more than us.

You guys were looking famous on that 1st beat out of the 1st start though! Were you ahead of us?

Hard work yesterday.

Was only about 15-18 knots most of the time and we were doing nicely. Couple of squirts in the late teens with the fractional up, and a wipe out on the run. Wheels fall off our wagon on the last beat though. Breeze picked up a lot and we were struggling with the 3 and a reef. 6 knots forward, 2 sideways in the gusts! The 40 footers smoked us on that last beat and we ended up 4th on line, 3rd on corrected somehow. We were expecting a hiding in the results as we didn’t feel we were going well on the wind. Everyone else must have been having the same issues though. Amazed how quick that Marauder ‘Flasher’ was upwind in the heavy air. They put time on us when we were struggling!

Did Settlers Reach have some issues at some point? Couldn’t see them at the finish. Hopefully nothing too major if they had to pull the pin.

we tore the shackles out of the mast that were holding the running back stays with the gunny up an the rig nearly fell over the side :?. went to go up wind and the rig was all floppy so pulled the pin. then to top it off the motor cut out and still Havnt got it started suspect injector pump has given up. hopefully can get it sorted for the next race!

We had a pretty interesting race too. All good until the last beat. We were trucking along on the first 5 legs. Had a good start gassed away from glory days which was nice. Ran the fractional genny on the first reach and watched wt almost wipe out on the gybe so decided to drop rather than gybe. Should have gybed as settlers were chasing hard under the square top.

Had another good beat and were talking about shaking the reef out at the top mark. Then the fun began!!

Went to set the fractional kite again and the halyard disappeared to the top of the mast so set it on the masthead halyard.

Off we went. then it got windier, and windier and windier.

At each gust raffertys just accelerated top speed was sustained 14 - 15 knots with the bow lifting and no control issues at all.

Brilliant!!

Until we hit the bottom mark. 35 knots constant we popped the second reef in and was weathering it ok with the 40 footers disappearing over the horizon and Kirsten J romping up behind us.

200m before the finish the jib self tacker track exploded.

so it was a slow finish bareheaded.

I think we got 6th on handicap which was ok.

Brilliant ride down wind though

We had a GoPro on the instrument bracket for the race, so will see that that got tomorrow. Had some fogging issues though, so maybe nothing is usable.

I know! She's a pretty dry ride with no water over the deck or anything. It’s really nice to be able to hold onto the tiller handles in the breeze downwind though. So much more control than with the tiller extension. The old man is really smooth on the helm once she gets up to speed also. Makes for a much calmer ride if the boat isn’t all over the ocean. With a bit more of a settled crew we would have put the big gear up to the run, then she's more lively.

Jim Young 8.4. (actually 8.675 LOA) Designed in 1987 as a circuit racing trailer boat able to fit in a 40’ container with a lifting keel, water ballast and a deck stepped rig. There’a about 12 of them I think.
