Sailing from Nelson to Auckland

juxta

Recommended Posts

In February after much pondering of alternatives we sailed a Ross 930 from Nelson to Mana and trucked it north. It's 650+ miles either coast and a big risk in a light boat you don't know all that well. Costs about $2500 to backload from Mana for a 30 footer but for 26' you might even find a cheaper option. Sailing it would be a big call...

Its doable but often with a boat of that size will work out cheaper to truck from Mana

Especially when you take into account the time off for you and crew

Thanks, you guys may have saved me a lot of grief.

Could you tow one with an appropriate trailer from Mana to AK?

I have a Jeep Cherokee for towing? V6 4 litre.

(Or would that cost me $1500 in gas ;-)

i'd imagine it pretty unlikely that something like a 26' keeler, raven, could be put on a pretty heavy and specialised trailer and then safely towed up and over the volcanic plateau to auckland

but you should be able to find out the weight of the boat and look up the towing limit on your jeep to find out

We towed Rocky/Counterpoint up from Nelson to Tauranga on a borrowed Fizz Boat trailer, we used a twin Cab Isuzu and Put the Keel on the Back of the Truck, the Boat was almost too light and the front got Blown sideways a bit on the trailer in Gale Force winds.

Had no major problems though.

Are you looking at the Tracker down there? it does look like pretty sharp pricing so could be worth towing.

If she is in good condition (you will have to be pretty sure about it before attempting this) I'd sail/cruise it up over the summer hols as part of the adventure. You will need to have a big enough holiday so that there won't be too much time pressure - Its a long trip on a 26 foot yacht and quite likely you will lose a significant chunk of time dodging and cursing the weather.

What's the point of buying a boat to put on a truck? Of course you should sail if you have the time. Will take at least 6 days via either coast. You'll remember the trip for the rest of your life and you'll have a terrific time.

If you need experienced crew to boost the confidence there are certainly people on this site who can help.

+1 ........... twice

It maybe an arse or it maybe be spectacular but one thing for sure is you'll remember it forever.

As long as "forever" doesn't have it's ending somewhere on the trip

I would be wanting to know that the Boat is in seriously good shape and Sails all good condition.

You have Castle Point to call into if you really need somewhere. Then Napier, Gisborne, then several bays around East cape. Which I would call into rather than Gisborne now that I have done it. It's a long stretch across from East Cape to Coromandal. Then it's easy stuff to Auckland.

It's a shorter trip if you go up the West coast, but you have nowhere much to go if you really need shelter.

Personally, if you haven't got much experience, I would be hesitant in telling you to go for it, especially in an unknown boat.

Seriously, you think a Nelson to Auckland run on an old 26 footer is a good way to test an unknown boat?
Horses for course obviously but I can't see why not.....after all the usual pre voyage checks knot showing any nasty obviously.

Last year a boat got full YNZ Cat 1, it had a pro crew and it was a fully state of the art engineered boat. Most would say that's about as checked as you can get............. yet it still snapped in 1/2 a few days later.

Surely the west coast would be substantially better than the east coast from nelson. much much shorter without cook straight, palliser, wairapa coast and east cape to deal with. all of which are up there with the nastiest places in the north island.

Actually East Coast route is slightly less 613nm as opposed to West Coast 624nm and thats taking you a long way offshore. But yeah appreciate those East Coast capes can't be taken lightly. Thats why we bailed and trucked

At least the East Coast is a lee shore 90% of the time. Best to sail through Cook Strait too, certainly much easier than Cook Straight.

And in suggesting earlier that they go and have a great adventure, I had assumed at minimum a comprehensive survey and that the new owner has checked ithe boat thoroughly. Even a trip to Mana would be stupid without same. Also they set off in a good weather window, looking at legs of 2-3 days.

Oh and Gisborne is a great little port to layover in.

I have a Raven 26 and have sailed the boat further than the proposed trip, both north and south. Nothing wrong with a 26 foot keeler.

But I guess if all the sailing you've done is racing around the buoys in the harbour then ....

well I know which way I would go and I have done both coasts many times.

I just worked out the west coast to be 4 NM shorter on navionics. I think its essentially the same.

From Nelson/Marlborough???? You sure??

We had a hell trip up the East coast. Pounded into North Easterly from Palliser to Napier. 60kts around East Cape and huge Seas and lightening striking the Sea around us caused us to go back to Gisborne. Then later, a huge swell in Gisborne caused the Marina Finger to break up and damaged the Boat.
